Why?-The Purpose of Education The purpose of education has changed over time. Let’s take a look how views on the purpose of education have evolved over time. In the 1930’s “the purpose of education has been to everyone, in essence the same—to give young the things they need in order to develop in an orderly sequential way into members of society” (Dewey 1934). Martin Luther King was an avid speaker on education. In 1948 he gave a speech at Morehouse College speaking about education. King stated that, “the function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. But education which stops with efficiency may prove the greatest menace to society. The most dangerous criminal may be the man gifted with reason but no morals… We must remember that intelligence is not enough? Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education” (Sloan 2012). Comparing the 40’s to the 30’s the purpose of education was to make sure that it provided young people with good character who would be able to succeed at life. In the 50’s the ASCD Committee said that, “the main purpose of the American school is to provide for the fullest possible development of each learner for living morally, creatively, and productively is a democratic society” (Sloan …show more content…
Education changes over time; thus school society is not a static substance. It is continually being developed and molded through associations with others and through reflections on life and the world all in all. School society creates as staff individuals associate with one another, with understudies, and the group.
