Purpose Of Annotated Essay

According to the Library of Cornell University an annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 150 words) descriptive and evaluative paragraph, the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited. Annotations may summarize the source. Summarizing may include reviewing what the man arguments are and what the point of the article or book is. When you are summarizing you need to make sure you tell which topics are about to be covered and a brief description of what is the article or book talking about. After you summarize you need to make sure to evaluate if the source you are using is useful or not, if the information you are providing is reliable, and to develop the goal of the source. The final step helps you to reflect if the information of the paper has been helpful and if it has helped you to shape your argument. I have personally not worked on an annotated bibliography, however, with the research I have made I think it …show more content…
Some information that is found in an annotation includes, the qualifications of authors, the purpose or scope, the audience and level of reading difficulty, bias or standpoint of author, the relationship to other works in the field, findings, results and conclusion and lastly the format and special features. There are many reasons why I think an annotated bibliography is a good tool for research. I think this method encourages people to think more critically about the content of the work you are using, and it also proves that you have not only read but understand the sources. An annotated bibliography also makes your work a valid source since you have done research about it and most importantly provides a way for others to decide if the source will be helpful to their research if they decide to read

    1. You have a great first paragraph, but I think that you should shorten it, and divided it to smaller paragraphs. You have to many quotes in one paragraph. You can focus one paragraph on September eleven and how it cause racial profiling. Another paragraph can be about how in airports most Africans American and Latinos are stop to be searched because of not only terrorism, also for other crimes like smuggling drugs, which whites are equally as guilty for the same crime but are not stop because of their race.…

“How to Mark a Book”, written by Mortimer J. Alder, Ph.D., and published on July 6, 1941. This article is the “father of books” opinion of the benefits of marking in a work of literature as you read it. Dr. Alder devoted his life to education and firmly believed that great conversation and learning stems from the discussion of great works. This article particularly highlights this belief as it is his expressed opinion of the proper way to “do the most efficient kind of reading.” This article walks you through what he believe the benefits are to not just reading between the lines but marking in them, as well as a few creative suggestions to navigate around some of the popular objections to the thought of writing inside a book.…

In the book “A Path Appears” by the winning journalist Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn wrote about making chances to create opportunity to change for better. It was published in September 23, 2014. The first thing I did before I read the book, I looked the summary from the back and the author’s background to better understanding. The introduction of Path Appears, grabbed me attention because there has little short stories about people who made it change and impact on themselves or for the community. The way I annotate for the novel, I used the sticky notecards to mark the main points or supporting points.…

In “How to Mark a Book” by Mortimer J. Adler to be an active reader, there is more to it than just reading. By assessing how important Mortimer emphasizes the importance of writing in a book I made sure to clarify how one can write in a book. Like in this sentence, “According to Adler, there are plenty of ways one can mark in a book; underlining, vertical lines at the margin, asterisk, numbers in the margin, circling or highlighting, writing in the margin at the bottom or top, etc.” (Chavez 1). This clearly states how one can write in a book if they do not know how to start.…

The purpose of college, this question can be answered in many different ways. The purpose of college for some people might be to get a degree and move on into the next chapter in life, but I feel that college should be more than that. I feel that college should be a way to express yourself in ways you couldn’t before and to be able to explore new ideas and to shape yourself to become someone new. College for some people might seem like just another step in the never ending staircase of life, but to me college is more than, that it's shaping me into the person I want to become and shaping my life for what I want and who I want to be. The purpose of college is to find a source of happiness, whether that is a field of study a person or something else is up for you to…

As described, the two types of annotations are: summary-only and evaluative. Summary-only is an annotation without any addition comments from the bibliography author. Evaluative annotations include the author’s critique of the work. Three features of annotated bibliographies are the rhetorical information, a summary of the source’s content, and the writer’s evaluation of the source. Since the idea of an annotated bibliography is unfamiliar to me, it was very helpful that chapter 7 included examples of both summary-only annotations, and evaluative.…

As a young person, choosing what to study is one of the hardest decision you have to make. According to a Washington Post article, “What’s the purpose of college: A job or an education?” by Jeffrey J. Selingo, learning and getting more knowledge about the world used to be a purpose of higher education, but nowadays it switched to getting a job after graduation rather than gaining more knowledge. Education is the most important factor in order to be successful, but lots of people are in college because their parents want them to, while others think that college is the next destination they have to go through after high school. To me, college is the place that teaches us how to think, how to analyze things thoroughly and to pursue a good career…
