The main purpose of a Correctional Officer is to supervise and maintain order and control of inmates that are housed within the walls of the prisons and jails. However, there is much more to being a correctional officer as in ensuring the inmates keep up on assigned duties like housekeeping and keeping living areas sanitary. Also policing the amount of clothing and personal effects inmates are allowed to have. These checks also prevent the chances of contraband getting into the institutions. Officers do this by conducting periodic inspections of cells and common areas the inmates inhabit. Officers also conduct regular counts of inmates to confirm all are accounted for.
