Purpose of a College Education
Enrolling in college was not a decision that I took lightly, but is one of the most important decisions I have ever had to make. Taking college classes and working towards a degree is something I want to achieve. Attending college was a heated and an important part of my divorce decree. Recognizing the privilege that I have of being able to continue learning, achieving and stretching my limits is appreciated. Because of the fortunate circumstances that I have, to live in a country where I can attend college and have the same chance at success that everyone else has been one reason I enrolled in college. Having not been in a classroom for 26 years, I find I am unsure and like to stay within my comfort zone. By meeting the general education requirements, I will experience new settings, people, and thought processes that otherwise would be absent. These are the classes that will give me skill sets specific to my declared discipline. In the video, The Structure of a College Education, Professor Jones says, “The major is the “stem” and other things grow from it”. Electives and Extracurricular activities may add to the major, but will definitely improve the quality of my educational experience. Participation in the co-curricular activities that take place within your department are critical to opening doors such as internships or potential career opportunities. In my declared major, Law and Constitutional Studies, we have already had the opportunity for a social and two guest speakers. By attending these events, I learn from firsthand sources in addition to making connections. Last week I had the good fortune to take my kids to the Homecoming concert, this allowed a very good example of how I bridge the path between home and becoming an educated
