Purpose In Time To Play

Decent Essays
This years theme for Augustana “Time to Play” correlates well with the choice of Footloose as this years play. There are a couple things that link the two of these things together including the university institution itself and new perspectives. Often within the university setting we are locked into the academic side with not too much time for fun between assignments, readings and studying, especially where the emphasis is put on academics rather than fun. Often we hear that at university three things matter but you can only choose two of them; good grades, sleep or a social life. By being able to choose only two of these the other falls by the wayside as default, but it does not have to be this way. With a theme of “Time to Play” we draw

In 1968, the Marching Tar Heels of the University of North Carolina (UNC) released a 7-inch 33 ½ rpm record consisting of eight school songs including “Here Comes Carolina,” “Carolina Fight Song,” and UNC’s alma mater “Hark the Sound.” Past UNC students wrote and composed over half of the fight songs featured on the album, and the student marching band performs the same songs today, nearly five decades later. In fact, the band and fans conclude each game with “Hark the Sound,” linking arms and singing the lyrics a UNC student wrote over 100 years ago in 1897. As the “Go Tar Heels!” exhibit exemplifies with this piece, a game is about more than the athletes.…

Imagine being a college student and you spend most of your summers working on a factory floor. Now think about the real-life lessons you would learn from the factory floor. The early mornings, the long hours for low pay, the people that work there for most of their lives, and the possibility of the job itself not existing due to overseas relocation. Now all these are life lessons that are slowly teaching you to appreciate being a college student.…

Today many students are scared to go “outside of the box” because they are worried about “fitting in.” In the excerpt “On the Uses of a Liberal Education,” written by Mark Edmundson, an English teacher who teaches at the University of Virginia, Edmundson states that both teachers and students at colleges do not value the opportunity of education rather a “customer culture.” First, Edmundon begins with a day that he does not like evaluation day. Edmundson typically receives good reviews; however, there are certain words that Edmunson prefers not to see when looking at his evaluations.…

In a 2007 article for Educational Leadership, “The Essential Cognitive backpack” Mel Levine argues that high school graduates are missing the necessary “gear that ought to find its way into every graduates cognitive backpack”(17). In his article, Levine explains in four main sections what he calls “The four I’s [of his essential cognitive backpack…] Interpretation, Instrumentation, Interaction, and Inner Direction.”(17). In Levine’s first section of the article “Interpretation”, Levine begins his argument with an anecdote about a student who is struggling in college because in high school she depended on her good memorization skills rather than understanding concepts as a whole.…

Veitch suggests that we can turn stressful moments and make them enjoyable. Veitch’s main idea is that we can make our own fun out of frustrating situations by creating a game out of it. In my opinion, I agree with Veitch’s argument because, this is helpful for people to turn frustrating moments into an enjoyable one instead. In my experience, when I was waiting at a doctor’s office, boredom made me frustrated because I was waiting so long and had nothing to do, it made me mad about the situation I was in. If I made a game to make it more interesting, and I wouldn’t have been mad about waiting.…

About one third of the way through my second face-to-face interview with Diana Orozco , she said something that provided a window into her current state as an adult learner. She stated that “Time is precious and I feel like I don’t have a couple of hours a week to continually be in a class or a course were I’m not going to gain anything.” This statement wasn’t even a direct answer to the question at hand. It was a side comment, but it gave me insight to build Diana’s profile as an adult learner.…

“Traying” was the first entry that caught my eye because it shows that Wellesley is the type of school that has traditions and a tight-knit community, which is something I am looking for in a college. Not only does sledding on a lunch tray sound incredibly entertaining, but the tradition illustrates that even though Wellesley students work hard, they also find time to have fun. “Traying” demonstrates that finding an optimal balance between work and play is important to the Wellesley community. Additionally, “Traying” exemplifies the “fun” aspect of college that students look forward to.…

Does age really matter? Many students, and even adults of the 21st century argue that there is no meaning behind studying books and plays dating back to the 1500’s, because the time during which they were written, is nothing like life as they know it. However, many of the themes, problems and struggles in plays and books of the renaissance era share a plethora of commonalities with the challenges and struggles today’s society faces. There are many common themes between Shakespeare’s play Hamlet and Judith Guest’s novel Ordinary People. The three major themes that the two literary works share in common are mental health, fate versus responsibility and family and a sense of belonging.…

Some people have secrets and opinions that others do not know about. Others have no boundaries to what they will tell others. I fall somewhere towards the no boundaries side of the spectrum, although, I still have a fair amount of things I do not tell my friends and family. I could say how much I absolutely hate those slushy days of spring where your shoes get soaked or I could talk about how much I really do not care about my horse hair allergy and still would love to have a horse but, instead of saying those, I will not. Instead I will talk about that instance in which I didn’t tell them about me.…

Several studies show that the most valuable and important time commitment in a course was the time actually spent in the classroom.(Schiming) Some other valuable and important time commitments included the time spent in discussion sections that complemented the lectures, and the time spent studying outside of class preparing for the class itself.(Schiming) That study concluded that the most productive time spent in any course was in the classroom; and that time had the greatest positive impact on the students’ performance. Another study of similar motives was taken on the most significant activities the impacted the students’ performance in any given course. The results of that study showed the idea that the most important learning takes place in the classroom and that students who do a conscientious job on a daily basis preparing for and participating in class perform better than students who skip class and try to cram for exams.(Schiming)…
