Purpose Family Goal: Guy's Identity As A Gay Man

htPurpose Family Goal:
Learn to communicate and interact better as a family. In this family group session which makes session four the family has decided to look at one person’s goal in each session. In addition, for this week’s session, Guy’s individual goals and issues will be discussed which are his issues of struggling with his identity as a gay man, especially because his family has expressed negative thoughts and feelings about his sexuality. He is depressed because his partner is cheating on him and he has low self-esteem due to his isolation from his family and his partner Allan.
Guy’s Issues and Individual Goals:
To improve his self-esteem about his identity as a gay man.
Would like his family to have more positive statements and feelings expressed by the family about his homosexuality.
Would like to have more support and empathy from the family about his partner having an affair with another man.
Guy would like to feel more connected and supported by the family, which will help guy feel less

In addition, he would like his Grandma Beatrice to accept him since she is the one that does not like who he is a gay man. Beatrice finally starts to open up and share her true feelings and that is looking at things differently, she shares that she could never be sexually or romantically attracted to another woman and she cannot change who she is attracted to which is men. Furthermore, she states that she loves Guy and he is a wonderful grandson, however, she is old-fashioned and is set in her ways and thinking about certain things. Beatrice says, “Guy can’t change who he is attracted to, however, it is hard for her to change her feelings about men having sex with other men. It absolutely was not accepted when I was growing up, and she finds it hard to dispel those feelings and attitudes about gay

Support groups are imperative to helping youth questioning their sexuality to become more comfortable with the possibility of possibly coming out as queer (Sue and Sue, 2009,p477).
