Purpose and Hypotheses of the Study The study by Agarwal and Jaisawl (2010) had two primary objectives. The first objective was to discover the learning style prevalent among adolescents who belong to different levels on mental ability. The second objective was to analyze the effect of mental ability on six learning styles of higher secondary level students. The authors of this study believe the mental ability of students may be a significant factor influencing the learning style preferences of students.
Sample
The research work was comprised of 750 students studying in class VII to X. Those students were selected from 45 different government/aided and privately managed secondary schools from the Rohilkhand region (northwestern Uttar Pradesh

The tools given to the students were the Students Learning Style Scale by Grasha and Riechmann (GRLSS) and the Standard Progressive Matrices developed by J.C. Raven, J.H. Court, and J. Raven. The GRLSS was used to collect data, the tool measures the preferences of students’ learning processes when interacting with teachers and other students. It assesses the six different learning styles (independent, dependent, competitive, collaborative, participant, and avoidant), then from these six styles it forms three pairs of opposite traits: (A) Independent–Dependent, (B) Competitive – Collaborative, and (C) Participant – Avoidant. A score on each time from 1 – 5 are added up for each learning style separately. The scale provides a value for the level of each style. The Standard Progressive Matrices measures the mental ability of students. This scale consists of 60 problems that are divided into five sets: A, B,C,D, and E. Each set contains 12 problems, and in each set the problems get increasingly difficult. I, one day, hope to become an educator and this information can be used in my own classroom. Through this study, I’ve can apply the learning styles that were preferred by low, moderate, and high mental ability students. I can hold a classroom that adopts the preferred dependent, participant, and competitive learning styles. Within our society, there is a large focus that each child is very different and they also learn differently. It is impossible to accommodate for every child’s needs so that’s why it’s important to conduct research that is specific to what learning styles are preferred by all mental ability levels of students and not to just one level. It’s important be able to be flexible as a teacher in your teaching styles and recognize which learning style is best for the overall class and individuals based on their mental
