The book Purple Hibiscus is the point-of-view of a fifth-teen-year-old girl named Kambili. She has a family and they live in Enugu, Nigeria. Kambili and her family are living a wonderfully privileged life. She and her brother Jaja live in a nice neighborhood. They go to the best private schools and eat wonderful meals every day. The mother is a soft-spoken woman, however, the father is a strict despotic catholic who everyone respects in the neighborhood. The family begins to take a horrible toll when Jaja refused to take communion on Palm Sunday. Papa asked Jaja why he did not do it. When Jaja did not give a reasonable excuse, Papa throws a missal at him. In doing so, he breaks all of the figurines that Mom loves. This act of violence from

In the beginning of the book, Kambili says, “Papa flung his heavy missal across the room and broke the figurines on the étagère. (Adichie 7).” This is the first act of abuse that happens in the book. The excuse Jaja gave his father “The wafer gives me bad breath (Adichie 7)” definitely is not an ideal excuse to give. Although Jaja's explanation caused father to showcase anger towards the family, the father's destructive behavior can not be justified. Kambili at the beginning does not have a clear grasp of love. She states, “The tea was always too hot, always burned my tongue suffered. But it didn’t matter, because I knew that when tea burned my tongue, it burned Papa’s love into me. (Adichie 8).” She is mixing her emotions of pain and burning and proclaiming it to be love. Kambili does not know that true love is calm, soft and peaceful. She tremendously seeks approval of her father “’God will deliver us.’ I said, knowing Papa would like my saying that… Then he reached out and held my hand, and I felt my mouth were full of melting sugar (Adichie 26)”According to Daria Tunca, she says “… The symbol of the purple hibiscus… represents the heroine’s and her brother’s blossoming and embodies the sense of serenity (Tunca web)”. In The Color Purple Celie, the main character is a quiet woman, but most people think she is a dumb useless women. Things turn for the worst for Celie when her father sold her to Mr. (later called Albert). Celie then gets raped and abused by Albert while they are married. Albert tells Celie “She ugly. Don’t even look like she kin to Nettie. (Walker 18).” Celie has to take care of Albert’s children. However, Celie life takes a turn when Shug Avery comes to town and shows Celie that she should not let Mr. talk to her in a way that is demeaning. I see that Aunty Ifeoma supports Jaja, Kambili and mom in the same manner Shug comforted Celie. Shug and Aunty Ifeoma have the same personality and do not let anybody run over
