Essay 1 The typical childhood of a Puritan was controlled by their parents and anyone with high authority from England before traveling to the New World known as Massachusetts in the 17th century. The children were taught about religious, modest and obedience. The parents were to raise their children the way they were taught by their ancestors. The Puritan childhood experience was very different from the childhood of this modern time.
Religion was present in the lives of the Puritans to their children. According to Hollitz Ch.2 p.22 “The Puritans were to teach their children basic tents or religious practice.” The reason why the Puritans moved to the New World was to practice their religion …show more content…
The Puritan children were taught at an early age which is similar to the modern children learn new skills when reaching adulthood. They also learn about the religion their parents worship and attending Church on Sundays. Modern children are obedient to their parents when asking permission. The modern children are allowed to show emotions, not like the Puritans children. Attending school is obligated like the Puritans when they send their children to school. According to Slavicek pg.92 “The Puritans demonstrated a dedication to education that continues to influence the United States school systems.” When misbehaved or cursing, the parents would punish them not by death, but with discipline like spanking or grounded.
In conclusion, the life of a Puritan child wasn’t easy during the 17th century, they had to learn at an early age by their parents to get ready for when they reach adulthood. Following the rules of society and their religion, and being an example for modern children. The history of the Puritans is interesting for people who might be taking a History class learning about how they live, where they were from, what they were teaching to their children, how the parents and society played their roles and the difference between the childhood of Puritan and modern.
