Pura Vida In Costa Rica

Decent Essays
Pura vida is a commonly used phrase in Costa Rica. It symbolizes the idea of simply enjoying life and being happy. There are moments in my life that I can say was my pura vida. During the summer I spent a lot of time with my cousins playing video games. That summer was the summer I enjoyed the most. My cousins and I played games like Super Smash Bros, Nintendo Land, and Mario Party Island Tour. Nintendo Land was really fun and the Mario chasing mini-game was the best. It was hard if you were playing Mario because the only way to win is juking others and stalling time. There were times when one of us would win in a stupid way or we would all fail completely. This was one my pura vida moments but there is also another one.

Children and teenagers like to “fly above the trees on a canopy zip line tour, go horseback riding in the hills,” (“Costa”), in Costa Rica, but usually American children and teens don't do that during their free time. Costa Rica's average lifestyle for a child or teen is different than an American child or teen because of their school days, homelife, and extracurricular activity. There are many differences between school life in Costa Rica and school life in America. For instance, imagine only getting ten minutes to get all energy out during the school day. Wouldn't that be tough?…

I was born in the Dominican Republic, to parents with education no greater than 8th grade. I have always been fascinated with astronomy, since my dad bought me my first fake telescope, while we were living in Puerto Rico. Receiving Isaac Asimov The Birth and Death of Stars only strengthened this at age 5. Then life got on the way I grew up between Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic, completing high school in Santo Domingo, where the concept of doctoral studies was foreign at the time,…

Born and raised in the United States, I consider myself as an American woman. However, some people seem to question my culture and I would then tell them that I am Dominican and Ecuadorean due to my parents born in each of their countries of origin. It is interesting to see that my culture has a lot of different beliefs, values, and traditions compared to the United States. For example, in both my Dominican and Ecuadorean families, parents are expected to have their son/daughter be married by the age of 21. Being an American, I would view this as something impossible to achieve but knowing this would allow me to not react so shocking when approaching a client who is my age and married with children because that is expected in those cultures.…

I woke up on the cushioned beach chair, gazing across the seemingly endless magical, blue aura of the ocean. As far as I could see, glistening sand stretched across the water, as the magnificent, jagged rock structures that watched over the Pacific Ocean like birds over their prey. Just two hours outside of San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, golf courses, resorts and beaches lined the entire peninsula. The luxurious resorts boasted private beaches and exclusive accommodations along the picturesque coastline of Peninsula Papagayo. Any accommodations you could possibly imagine would be provided immediately by the professionally trained wait staff.…

We started the trip with a whole day of traveling, kicking it off at 6:30 am. We went to Atlanta as our connecting flight, then we were finally on our way to the D.R. This summer I was very fortunate to go to Dominican Republic. Before this trip I haven’t visited Dominican Republic in over five years, so I was pretty eager to visit. When I first stepped out of the plane, I took in a breath. I feel that the air over there smells so different since many people over there burn their garbage, I actually like that smell. The streets in Dominican Republic are very bumpy and have a lot of motorists, so during my visit I did not hesitate to drive.…

One foot rooted in urban Puerto Rican heritage and the other having been later immersed in the Southern black experience as an adult, I have learned to merge the conceivably disparate cultures of my family. Each afforded me a unique point of view, developing the self-assurance that has empowered me to succeed in the face of adversity. Being of Puerto Rican descent in the inner city kept the lack of financial stability of my youth in view and motivated me to pursue my education. As a black American female I learned the value of diversity, having experienced first-hand the misconceptions that can shape in a homogeneous environment. For instance from being called “too much of a free-spirited city girl,” in the country to later being “too old-fashioned…
