After meeting for the first time in a classroom setting and having a short training session on how to handle the dogs, they are ready to work with them. Each week the students meet the instructors at different areas on campus to have class. Students act as the dog’s handlers and assist with training, playtime and exercise. The goal is to improve animal detection science to better defend the nation and society. One of the most important aspects of this class is to socialize the dogs so that they are able to work in an environment around people.
Haney says, “The students think it’s playing, but to the puppies it’s really a step in their foundation for them learning how to socialize and learning simple training tasks and going out into the public and having positive interactions with the community and their environment. Everything becomes a big playing field of a game that they can play as they grow to become better detection dogs.” A current student in the course, Bain Gurley, says that this is one of his favorite classes he has taken at Auburn. “QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE QUOTE
