What is punishment? In a psychology view, it’s introduced by Cherry as: “Punishment is a term used in operant conditioning to refer to any change that occurs after a behavior that reduces the likelihood that that behavior will occur again in the future. While positive and negative reinforcement are used to increase behaviors, punishment is focused on reducing or eliminating unwanted behaviors.” So from that explianation, we know that Positive punishment works by presenting a negative consequence after an undesired behavior is exhibited, making the behavior less likely to happen in the future. Such as if a child doesn’t like doing housework, then when he made a mistake, he need to do housework for 10 minutes. The opposite way of punishment, is nagitive punishment. An example of that, if a child likes playing computer, but didn’t do his maths homework, so his mother makes him cannot play computer today, and finish his maths hommework.
Since we know how punishment works in human psychology field, there are two main opinions appear in this situation, one is punishment work well in teaching people learning: the other side is punishment doesn’t work well in teaching people learning.
