Pumpkins Personal Statement

Pumpkins have shaped me into what I am today. Well, not exactly pumpkins, but for the last twelve years my family’s business has given me the opportunity to discover my strengths and talents, while financially supporting my collegiate aspirations. I am who I am because this experience has influenced me to become a hard-working, people savvy and business-minded young woman. It all started at my dad’s turkey farm in a little town called Goehner, Nebraska. On five acres of farmland we began growing dozens of unique pumpkin varieties to provide a large crop of inventory for our customers. It is a process that utilizes creativity as well as hard labor involved to plant and grow the pumpkins. With the dynamite work ethic I gained, I grew from a shy young child to an out-going, young entrepreneur. I learned how to listen to a customer’s concerns and maintain a positive demeanor from this experience, which will be invaluable in any occupation, but especially the health profession I plan to pursue. I’ve also developed business skills that have shown me a good product, strong customer base, and quality customer service is the key to success. Over the years, I have become more involved in the business decisions such as how much seed to plant, when to begin planting and also keeping track of inventory at our house. At home I have learned a lot about people in the city of Lincoln, which is often characterized as a city with a small town feel. For example, I remember a young lady helping an elderly woman load her pumpkins and also a customer’s honesty when placing their payment on our porch when we were gone. These instances have given me a newfound trust in good, genuine people in this
