Controls were eligible mothers who delivered a neonate at or after 37 weeks of gestation, consecutive to an enrolled case. Mothers who gave birth to twins or those with neonates having congenital anomalies were excluded from the study. Total 3ml venous blood was taken from each subject for further molecular study. Ethical clearance for the study was obtained from the Institutional ethical committee of King George’s Medical University. Written informed consent was obtained from participating mothers.…
She is here today to attempt to complete the fetal anatomical survey. On ultrasound there is a live fetus in breech presentation. Fetal biometry is consistent with dates. A limited survey was unremarkable but again due to fetal position and maternal body habitus we were unable to adequately visualize cardiac views. I explained the findings of today’s scan.…
I was born Anthony Vito Scavelli on August 21, 2002 at Lutheran General Hospital. When my parents heard about having twins they were very happy and excited. They sent letters to all of my family and family-friends telling them that they are having twins. When my parents told my 2 year old brother and 4 year old sister tey were both very excited to have another brother and sister to play with. Finally, my mother’s water broke around 1:00 am on August 21 and was into labor around 1:30 am.…
A 4 hours old age neonatal male with 37 weeks gestational age which admitted to neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) because of bradycardia (60-70 beats/ minute) and respiratory distress . His mother was 22 years old (Gravid 2, Para 1, Abortion 0) with normal examination and vital signs and pervious normal delivery. In 29 weeks gestational age she was reported to our emergency department because of fetus bradycardia (70-80 beats/ minute) in routine abdominal sonographic study. Ultrasound revealed no evidence of fetal distress. Fetal echocardiography showed complete heart block without any structural heart damage (isolated congenital heart block).…
Summer Twins Review: A Dreamy Dance Party Kicking off Valentine’s Day weekend with great music is not a bad way to dive into the holiday, for couples and singles alike. This last Friday, February 12, Summer Twins performed at Acerogami, Pomona, CA, joined by Veronica Bianqui. The entire event had a drinks-with-friends vibe, framed by the venue’s exposed brick, low lighting, projected music videos, and a few heart-shaped balloons at the stage. The beauty of smaller venues is the level of comfort they create. Conversation before and after the show flowed easily, from excitement about the performers to stray cats and operatic voicemails.…
Describe trisomy 21. Trisomy 21 is a genetic disorder commonly known as Down syndrome. It is caused by the presence of all or part of an extra 21st chromosome. IT is the most common chromosomal abnormality associated with intellectual disability. One in 730 live births results in trisomy 21.…
Transposition of the Great Vessels Transposition of the great vessels is a heart condition that is present in infants at birth and often known as a congenital heart defect or the more common term is the transposition of the great arteries(TGA). TGA is when the two main arteries, the pulmonary artery and the aorta, are switched in position, or "transposed". As a normal heart, deoxygenated blood returning to the heart from the body is pumped from the right side of the heart through the pulmonary artery to the lungs and to the left side of the heart then back out to the rest of the body with oxygenated blood and the cycle repeats. In TGA, deoxygenated blood returning are not going to the lungs to be oxygenated, but is pumped back out to the body.…
In addition, the etiologies behind Moebius syndrome are extensively discussed. Genetics was mentioned, which leads to the question if Moebius syndrome is an autosomal recessive trait since it only appears sporadically throughout generations? In addition, certain medications used during pregnancy were found to increase the chance of Moebius syndrome. These medications were usually taken within a certain gestational week period, and are most often abortion pills. One medication discussed in particular, misoprostol, was linked to several cases of Moebius syndrome in South America.…
When I was a few weeks old, my parents realized that I was not normal. I would not drink my bottle and I seemed to have a blue tint around my lips. Concerned, my parents took their precious firstborn to the hospital, where the doctors made a discovery that transformed not only my life, but the lives of everyone. What my family learned on this dramatic day was that I was born with heart disease.…
Preterm birth (<37weeks gestation) accounts for about 12% of all live-births in the US.1 Although more premature infants may be surviving due to improved obstetrics and neonatal care, they can suffer from complications including peri-intraventricular hemorrhage (PIVH). PIVH arise from destruction of the highly vascular neural and glial precursor cells in the germinal matrix leading to hemorrhage into the ventricular system. The incidence of PIVH among infants with birth weight of less than 1500g is 15-20%2,3 rising to approximately 50% in those with birthweight less than 750g. PIVH predisposes affected infants to lifelong neurological sequels such as cognitive impairment, neurodevelopmental delay and ventriculomegaly.4,5 Ventriculomegaly after…
Introduction Amnioinfusion is a procedure in which a germ-free (sterile) saline solution is added into the uterus. This may be done for various reasons, including: To increase the amount of amniotic fluid around the baby when there is not enough (oligohydramnios). Amnioinfusion may be done before an ultrasound test so that the ultrasound pictures provide a better view of the baby. It may also be used to help provide better care for the baby if certain kinds of problems are found with its lungs, kidneys, intestines, or other organs .…
The nurse will want to listen to see how loud the heart murmur is. Once she listens she will need to rate the murmur on a scale of 1 to 6, with 6 being the loudest. When listening to the murmur the nurse needs to note on what position on the heart the murmur is located. For example, is it on the back of the heart? She should listen to the pitch of the murmur.…
Twins seem to fascinate people across the world due to their distinctiveness and the fact that twinship is an unusual phenomenon. Societies worldwide have developed schemas for twins that influence how twins are perceived and the roles that twins are expected to fill. Societies believe that twins are supposed to be one and the same and that differentiation amongst twin is awkward and uncommon. It is also seen as unmoral and the twins are pressured to once again be one and the same. On a basic level, the naming of twins often takes into consideration the twinship.…
Preeclampsia has been termed a “disease of theories” (Davidson, 2012 p.461) because the exact cause of preeclampsia remains unknown, although there is growing evidence that the placenta plays a central role in the development of the disorder. It has been suggested that preeclampsia occurs from defects in implantation and formation of the placenta. Placental implantation with abnormal trophoblastic invasion of uterine vessels is said to be a major cause of hypertension associated with preeclampsia. Incomplete trophoblastic invasion of the uterine spiral arteries results in failure to transform from thick-walled muscular vessels to saclike flaccid vessels. Placental hypo-perfusion, caused by the incomplete invasion leads to the release of systemic vasoactive compounds that results in an exaggerated inflammatory response, vasoconstriction, capillary leak, hypercoagulability, platelet dysfunction and endothelial damage (Lim, 2016), all which directly correlates to the severity of maternal hypertension.…
Two children could also be considered twins if they’re from different mothers, if, “they were born in exactly the same kind of circumstances, at least from a moral and a psychological point of view.” The same thing can be said if the twins have different fathers: Levi-Strauss tells of a myth from the Tupinambas, a tribe from the coast of Brazil, about a woman who’s seduced by a devious Trickster. She conceives both with him and her legitimate husband and gives birth to twins, one from each father. Because of the opposition in parentage, the twins have opposing features.…
