Pulsar Research Paper

Most individuals with even the most rudimentary knowledge of science have probably heard of x-rays and gamma radiation. Very few however, will be able to tell you where these forms of radiation come from. The answer: Pulsars. Pulsars, or neutron stars, are physics sandboxes that provide extreme conditions for humans to experiment with which are not readily available on Earth. Due to this usefulness, the discovery and research of these phenomena should be of the utmost importance. These neutron stars, barely 12 miles across, are troves of undiscovered scientific mysteries.
To begin our journey into the mysteries of pulsars, it is wise to start at their original point of discovery. Pulsars were first predicted to exist by Zwicky and Baade in 1932, two astronomers, after they suggested that the massive amounts of pressure created in the center of a supernova explosion would be

They could be either an oscillating object, an orbiting object or a rotating object. However, once a pulsar was discovered inside the Crab Nebula supernova remnant this was discovered to be untrue. The reason the pulsar was discovered was due to the fact that the nebula was still very bright despite its age. A star in the middle was viewed as the cause, however the star would not fit into any of the already established categories (Pulsar Properties, 2018). Two astronomers took an interest in this occurrence and decided to monitor the Crab Nebula for pulsed radio emissions. They found high intensity pulses originating from the central strange star, and were therefore able to identify it as a pulsar. They later discovered that the giant pulses they observed, occurred every two minutes or so, and that the true pulse period was as short as 33 milliseconds. This discovery discarded white dwarfs from the possibility of being pulsars, as radial oscillations were only possible for periods longer than 1 second (Properties of Pulsars,

“Oh, be a fine girl/guy kiss me,” or maybe not. Learning this phrase has helped multiple astronomers to educate themselves on the spectral classification of stars and continues to do so in today’s time. Annie Jump Cannon’s legacy will carry on lasting a lifetime! The first letters of each word in the phrase represents the seven main types of stars. Starting with ”‘O,” these stars are very young, blue, hot, massive and extremely bright star.…

Planets and the stars have always fascinated me. Finding out how they were discovered is fascinating. We know that William Hershcel discovered the planet Uranus in 1781. But, how did it happen? He was using his telescope to check for “’double stars’—two stars that are so close together that, without proper magnification, they look like one star”.…

As the core grew, the supernova occurred, leaving behind what astronomers called a neutron star, a compact star entirely made of neutrons and very dense, to the point of forcing out the space between atoms. This was supported by the detection of the Neutrinos by an underground detector in Japan. Just as amazing as the mystery of the origin of SN1987A, is the story behind its…

The fact that Leavitt discovered her period-luminosity relationship in the early nineteen hundreds is astounding, especially given the lack of advanced technology. Hawking’s findings were monumental for the time in which he discovered them as well. While Hawking found out about black holes in 1974, it is still amazing. Despite the amount of technology, coming to the conclusion that radiation can escape black holes is very difficult. Both Leavitt and Hawking were driven at some point in their lives.…

It was found that these faint "stars" were not stars and were not only beyond our own galaxy, but were the most distant galaxies known Quasars are bright and are seen to vary at all energies. Having derived from radio discoveries, many quasars found interestingly do not emit radio waves in a detectable amount. Such are called quasi-stellar objects (QSO), but are lumped together in the category of quasar. In general, quasars actually are best seen and surveyed at X-ray (Finkbeiner 1992). While quasars have spectra similar to Seyfert galaxies, they tend to be farther away than Seyferts and appear point-like to the optical astronomer.…

Many cultures throughout history have referenced to distinct patterns in the sky formed by stars. These patterns have been called many things but now scientists refer to them as constellations. Often times in our society we forget what a privilege it is to have tracking tools and measuring devices but 5000 years ago they used these constellations to track time and be able to tell where they are. Constellations have been seen as specific animals or figures that are then told with myths. STILL NEED TO FINISH…

Discovery of Uranus William Herschel had a few motivations that led to his discovery of Uranus. However, “[he] spent most nights observing nebulae, looking for double stars, and searching for signs of life on other worlds.” (Ruskin 282) He basically discovered Uranus by accident supposing at first that it was a comet. After sharing his find with other astronomers, they questioned whether it was a comet at all.…
