Mothers want to support their kids to be successful and be affluent in their future - no matter the suffering. Both mothers, Pulcheria and Katerina compel their eldest daughters to suffer for the good of the family. For instance, Pulcheria agrees to the sacrifice of her daughter Dounia through the unfavorable marriage with the rich selfish man, Luzhin Petrovitch, for Rodya’s bright future. Pulcheria announces to Rodya that his sister’s marriage “may be of the greatest use to you, in every way indeed…from this very day you could definitely enter upon your career and might consider that your future is marked out and assured for you.” Through this marriage, Raskolnikov might be able to work as Luzhan’s secretary and get a well-paid job. She explains “Dounia wants to arrange it all like this [-marrying with a man that Dounia doesn’t love-] and… I agree with her” for Rodya’s happiness in the future. Similar to Dounia’s sacrifice for her brother, Sonia sacrifices her life as a prostitute after the fierceness and pressure of her step-mother, Katerina. In one day “when there was not a crust for the little ones for three days”, Katerina rebukes Sonia, with unconscious, “you eat and drink and are kept warm and you do nothing to help” and answers Sonia’s question about becoming a prostitute by “Why not?” which leads Sonia to become a prostitute. When Sonia first brought 30 roubles, Katerina kissed Sonia’s feet all night – grateful for her step daughter’s sacrifice for her little starved children. These two mothers’ hearts bleed for because they couldn’t support and do anything for their loved ones but agreed to their daughter’s
