I was born in Virginia, but I have moved back and forth across cultures, having grandparents living in three different countries and having spent six years of my life in Puerto Rico. As I reflect on the question, I realize that these places certainly provided subtle traits that contributed to who I am, such as the urge to never start eating without saying “buen provecho” to the table, as all Puerto Ricans do; my quiet “Andean” demeanor; and, as a good “Washingtonian,” my liking for debate, as I live in a cosmopolitan community where diversity of ideas and backgrounds are fully appreciated. Yet, the strongest influence on the way I see life are my parents and the unique experiences they arranged for me to live.
