Puerto Rico: A Short Story

After Hurricane Maria a couple of weeks ago, the lives of numerous friends and my family changed and as a result, I have been wishing that at some point I will go to my island and see the differences that a natural disaster could do to the lives of countless people. Therefore, if I have the chance to choose where I would go, it would definitely be Puerto Rico. The reason why I would like to go is that since the hurricane, I haven't seen peers saying: "We will go forward from this crisis", instead they just give up and leave the island to have prominent opportunities in a different establishment. Consequently, since then I have been yearning to see a change.

But, in this case, it wasn't just yours, instead, the homes of hundreds of people. Well, where I was born, they are in this position currently. For this reason, after seeing my family, I will like to take part of my time to at least grow a runty garden on my grandfather's land by the mountains.

In conclusion, before leaving my island I will make sure that I give my

For the first time in Puerto Rico’s history, they would have a voice in Congress, with five to seven representatives and two senators. Currently, Puerto Rico has a Resident Commissioner with a “voice” but no vote. Also, becoming a State would remove the island from the Territorial claws of the United States Constitution and would grant Puerto Rico the same political importance as all other 50 states. There are some negatives that the island has to take in consideration when making this decision. One of the reasons the idea of statehood could be argued is the rise of cost of living in the island by becoming part of the union.…

he single most compelling issue facing Puerto Rico in this time of unfolding and incipient economic crisis are those related to its work-force. It is multifaceted, but the unitary element is the underutilization of that aspect of the island’s society. Indeed, any economic situation is comprised of a multitude of factors; this is especially true of a society that is a part of a larger nation and yet separate and distinct. For further illustration, consider that Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States, making it different than the fifty states that constitute the nation itself.…

Through travel, I have learned about myself and the world I live in and to treat any hardship as an opportunity to learn and grow, I have obtained a respect for different cultures and ways of life, and I have discovered my passion for working with and teaching others. Every time I go to Haiti, the joy the adults and children carry with them is astonishing Haitians are so grateful for what little they have because they know that their lives could be much worse.…

In March this year, I brought up the idea about going to Costa Rica for our annual summer trip. My family and I had traveled to Europe in the past and experienced the famous tourist sites and cultures. In all of these tourist places, English was widely spoken and it was easy to get around, order food and find our way round. Costa Rica: safe, peaceful, adventurous, and a tourist haven. I envisioned Hawaii with even bigger mountains, more lush forests, coffee and chocolate everywhere, and lots of adventure activities.…

One of the topics we discussed last week was the potential for corporate executives to begin relocating to Puerto Rico. This is due to the aggressive tax breaks your government is offering corporations. When a Director, VP or SVP is relocated, they traditionally require temporary housing + a car from 30 to 100 days. Finding long-term housing + an automobile traditionally falls to their employer’s Human Resource Department.…
