Public vs. Private Education: When Interests Collide
Proper education is becoming increasingly accessible with each passing day, with parents who want their children to learn about the importance of a proper education. The parents/guardians want to have the choice to send their children to a reputable school that they will enjoy attending and where the children can sharpen their minds. However, not every child has this opportunity: some lack the funds needed to choose what school they want to attend while others simply don’t have any other choice. Recently, a bill was proposed to the House of Representatives that would allow parents this luxury of choice between private or public education, but it has stirred quite a bit of controversy. This bill “looks to create education savings accounts that would allow parents or guardians to receive public money to help pay for private school education (Plemons).” The bill offers the freedom of choice, but it will bring a substantial financial impact to public schools.
The object in question is called an education savings account, or ESA, which “represents state-issued funds that can be used to purchase education at any school, public or private (Schmidt, Shelly, Bardes).” One of the critical issues of the idea of and ESA is validating whether or not they violate the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, which states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise…
