According to O'Hair, Rubenstein and Stewart (2016) “Words are the public speaker’s tools of the trade…” (p. 117) In the fifth-tenth chapter of A Pocket Guide to Public Speaking, the authors write about which oral style to use, use of concrete language and vivid imagery, words that build credibility, and those that create an impression. I will summarize these areas in the following paper. When speakers are preparing speeches, they must remember that listeners only have one chance to hear the message that is trying to be conveyed.…

Speech Anxiety A time I had experienced speech anxiety was the first time I had to give my senior project speech in front of my peers. The night before my speech I had stayed up all night writing my speech and that morning I finished my power point. Writing the speech at the last minute was not the best idea, but I was fine because my speech was about something I had passion for at the time. Decorating the power point was not all that bad either.…

You are in class one day when the teacher announces a new assignment: students are to research and give an informative speech about any topic of their choosing. As the student, imagine that you are terrified to not only present the speech in front of your entire class, but to have to go through the process of picking a topic, researching it, organizing your speech, and practicing it as well. At the beginning of my communication class, this was how I felt about producing and giving speeches. I was nervous to talk in front of the class because I have always been very shy and have suffered from extreme speech apprehension. I also dreaded picking a topic and organizing my speeches as well, since I could never make up my mind and I was never good…

Although I feel that I did an adequate job on the group project one of the most important skills that I desperately need to improve on is learning to present in front of an audience. We had two assignments this semester that revolved around speaking in front of our class, the first being a speech by ourselves and the second being the group presentation. I am a cheerleader, so being in front of crowds does not bother me but what makes me the most nervous is when I have to speak in front of others by reading something I have written or completed. In the group presentation I was not as nervous since I was not alone in speaking to the class, but on the speech I did I was overcome with anxiety. Being able to talk in front of others is my biggest setback, but I am certain that with enough practice, patience, and preparation I will be able to calmly give a speech over any subject that I am required to do.…

I sometimes get nervous about what people are thinking about my speech when I am giving it but if I don’t judge people from the audience then I will have the mindset when I am on stage that people from the audience are not judging me.
