Modern public shaming has more severe consequences than public shaming in the past. When someone is shamed today, they are at the risking of losing their jobs, their friends, and possibly loved ones. They might end up on welfare or even suicide, and for as long as they’re remembered, hurtful comments will be thrown at them. In the past, public shaming was an one time event, the person being shamed would stand in front of a crowd for a few hours. The position they held in society might be lowered but they usually didn’t lose their job. In fact, the shaming of Hester from The Scarlet Letter gains customers through her sign of shame. It will never be taken down and there is the daily possibility of someone bringing the person’s name back into the spotlight. A youtuber named Sam Pepper came under fire in 2014 when he uploaded a “prank” video of him touching women inappropriately and pretending to not have. As angry social media warriors raged, Pepper’s past victims grew courage and came forward to confess that how Pepper wronged them. The women, most of which were under 20 when the incident occurred, revealed that they were raped or molested by Sam Pepper. In one woman’s account, she declared “He continued to do things to me against my will and forced me to give him head, nearly choking me.” On the account of these women and complaints about Pepper’s other videos that display Pepper mistreating women, Youtube dropped Sam Pepper as a partner as did his multi-channel network, Collective Digital Studio. A little more than a year after this incident, people are still posting scathing comments on his youtube channel, sayings things like: “Hey guys, what's wrong with my, “This is a great prank: Get a katana and perform hara-kiri in public”, and “go fucking blast your brain with a shotgun. piece of shit... i would love to see a vid of you suiciding.” As long as Pepper’s name is on the internet and anyone can look him up, his crime will be remembered and his shame will
