Public Service Research Paper

It is my opinion that public service is both nice and necessary. It is necessary for all citizens to be actively engaged in the success of their country by participating in activities that serve the public good, such as voting, volunteering and participating in political activities. Volunteering at a school to help educate the future leaders of our country, voting in city elections for a new mayor, and serving on a criminal court jury are necessary. It would be difficult to maintain our rights and freedoms if we are not involved. Some aspects of public service are nice. Adopting a roadway, cleaning up a park, and painting over graffiti are all things that are nice, but not necessary for the long term success and public good of the country.

Before attending high school, my elementary school teachers would talk about civic engagement, and their descriptions lead me to believe that participating in community service would be boring and burdensome. I remember my teachers saying things like,” In high school you’re going to have to do community service in order to graduate. Such as volunteer at an elderly home, or an animal shelter.” Prior to actually completing a service project, I only had an unappealing image of community service in mind. However, once I got to high school, I grew to love community service as well as learn the importance of…

I have completed many hours of community service and I believe that it is my responsibility to involve myself in my community in any way possible. Getting involved in the community helps build a strong character and it teaches certain values that will benefit other communities. Speaking of community improvement, it is also my responsibility to pay any taxes set for me by our state and federal governments. Without taxpayer money, it would be impossible to maintain many of our most precious and crucial government funded organizations. If the American people allowed those organizations to fade away, we would be hurting our country and helping ourselves.…

George Washington said, “When we assumed the soldier, we did not lay aside the citizen,” meaning that one who participated in public service, including the military, was often the common man, usually a farmer or worker. In the United States, many debate whether there should be mandatory public service. Mandatory public service is a widespread topic, while in many other countries, mandatory service is a normalcy. In South Korea, every male of legal age is required to serve 2 years in the military; if deemed unfit for military service, they must spend 2 years in civil service. Many other countries such as Israel require public, mostly military, service, as well.…

I dont agree that National Services should be mandatory to all Americans. I believe every one should have the right to decide to volunteer on their own. Manditory services would hurt the number of volunteers in America. In 09 63.4 million people volunteered by choice in churches, schools, and sports clubs. Private donations are likely to be $300 billion or more a year.…

Over the course of the semester I have been volunteering with American Public Square. I have completed around eleven hours so far and have been helping at events hosted by the group. At events I have helped attendants find seats, passed out programs, collected questions from the audience, tracked demographics, and cleaned up once attendees have left. While my acts have seemed small to me, those putting on the programs have said these little things amount to a large burden off their shoulders. From American Public Squares website it is an "organization that is changing the tone and quality of public discourse by bringing non like-minded people together to create a forum for fact-based, civil conversation about national, regional and local issues."…

One the most significant things that I learned in introduction to human services this semester was that everyone experiences situations differently, what might be something unimportant and minor to you might be a trigger for someone else. You should always be mindful of others, I think us as human beings we tend to be a bit selfish and like to think that the world revolves around us. Which, is ridiculous because the world has 7.3 billion people and counting, and what makes me more significant than all those other people? Sometimes I’ll go out to the store in a hurry and I’ll get a line with a cashier that is being extremely slow, and I get upset and start thinking of some nasty things about the cashier, without ever taking into consideration what that person might be going through.…

Introduction Debates and discussion around the reinvention of the American administrative state created several movements. These reforms tasked themselves with improving bureaucracy and solving political problems. With the complexity of administration becoming ever more prevalent, these reforms needed to take new approaches to succeed. Two such movements came in the forms of the New Public Administration and the New Public Service. Each reform theory was established during times when administration was needing to change.…
