Public Schools Vs. Private Schools

Recently I have interviewed a woman who once lived in France. Now residing in the United States of America, she was able to earn an education in both countries. Prior to conducting an interview, I researched France and its education system in order to familiarize myself with how it functions. Therefore, as she spoke to me about her schooling in France, I was able to follow along. There are certain facts she told that were fascinating, especially upon comparing them to the United states. Upon examining the education system in France, I realized that there school structure was similar, yet their curriculum was not. There are two types of schools, being public or private. Private schools are generally catholic schools that follow the same curriculum as public schools; however, they tend to incorporate religious teachings. Public schools in turn follow a path where the children go from maternelle, to école primaire, to collège, and then to lycée (“France Travel Guide,” 2016). Beginning at the age of three, children can enter maternelle, which is similar to preschool in that the goal is towards the development of speech and communication. Parents generally choose to enroll their children, where they in turn remain for three years. Furthermore, at the age of six, children enter école primaire, where they will spend five years.
