Education is crucial to the development of an individual and to their social and economic contribution to a nation. A quality education and a well-educated person are valued in this society and hence the decision to immerse the child in public schools or private schools requires careful calibration. There are many factors to be considered while choosing the stream of education and this task can often be stress-inducing. Public schools are run by local bodies and provincial government while private schools are funded and managed by private associations, charities and missionaries. Small class size is an attribute of private schools. In 1996, a study by Powell found that smaller school and class size are required to ensure student success. Private schools usually have smaller classes which prove to be beneficial to the students and the teachers. Teachers in small classes are able to manage students more efficiently by providing the individual attention they need. This individual attention allows for teachers to tailor the method of instruction according to the student’s needs. Students also have easier access to teachers which ensures a better learning process. On the contrary, public schools have a larger teacher to student ratio. The teachers in public schools are exhausted by the large student population and overcrowding in a single class. They are unable to manage the students and maintain discipline due to the constant disruption by the misbehaving student. Students in public school do not have easy access to teachers to clarify their doubts as the teacher is unable to provide them with individual attention. Private schools have more enriched opportunities like Advanced Placement courses, exchange programs and International Baccalaureate programs with access to experienced tutors that are more equipped to help the student on account of being familiar with its rising popularity and workings. AP courses and IB programs may be available only in select public schools with minimal access to experienced tutors. An AP course allows a student to take college level courses to earn course credit or placement while still in high school. Taking these courses provides them with the edge they need to earn a spot at a coveted university. For instance, a student with a threshold grade point in an IB program is granted an automatic entrance scholarship at certain university. Such an applicant is much better received by universities. These programs simultaneously prepare students for university and a future career where they can be innovative problem solvers. Students are also able to enroll in exchange programs that allow them to visit another country for a couple of weeks and immerse themselves in culture different from theirs.
