Character Education In Public Schools

In the past decade and half the way in which teachers in America have went about teaching has changed dramatically. Further, the government has become more involved in setting standards and determining the duration period that schools have to meet these standards. In addition, character education was one of the issues at the forefront of the changes made. In my opinion, I believe all public schools should require teachers to incorporate character education in their classrooms because of the positive effects due to character education such as but not limited to: increasing the growth of positive attitudes in children, increasing academic performance, and reducing violence and bullying.

Adults might question, “How does character education improve my child’s academic performance?” The two subjects are more closely related than one may conclude. A sense of responsibility and diligence are two of the main concepts taught in character education. Notably, the two concepts help the students focus on the curriculum presented in class. In addition, most importantly the students will have the drive to perform well in their academic subjects along with any other aspects within their lives. Character education can also lead to better interactions with peers, teachers, and other adults within the community. Further, even though character education has proven to be a successful learning experience for children, based on the National Center for Education Statistics, only 32% of all public schools provide character education in the United States (Brown, 79). This is sadly a disservice to our community as a whole because this means more than half the children in American schools are not taught ethical and moral responsibility, and this leads to lower performing academic children and violence and bullying on a larger scale. Overall, if character education is provided, it can improve the academic performance of students within public …show more content…
According to Greta Freeman, writer of “The Implementation of Character Education and Children’s Literature to Teach Bullying Characteristics and Prevention Strategies to Preschool Children: An Action Research Project,” Noddings avows ‘‘The greatest obligation of educators inside and outside formal schooling is to nurture the ethical deals of those with whom they come in contact’’ (1984, p. 49) (2013, p. 306). In summary, the quote eludes to the belief that teachers are not only responsible for teaching the curriculum, but they are also responsible for the moral education of their

Good character, as I see it, is important not only in my life but for everyone so that the world functions smoothly. I do not like to think of myself as perfect in any way, but when it comes down to it and who I am as a person, I believe I have very good character. How I act around and treat my peers shows this quality. When meeting someone new, I am friendly, easy to get along with, and I believe their opinion is just as valuable as my own. I am also an honest and trustworthy person.…

Lyndon B. Johnson once said that “Education is not a problem. Education is an opportunity.” Education has always been a way for children to expand their knowledge, and expand their minds as well. However, it has been brought to the attention of many, that education is now a way to force ideals down the throats of knowledge thirsty children. In trying to fit in standardized tests, teachers and schools have lost sight of the true purpose of education: to teach young people the rights and responsibilities of citizens.…

An incident that impacted me significantly occurred when I was in the fifth grade. I was always a high achiever and an “A” student. In this essay, Fishman and McCarthy describe Dewey’s views on the goal of education and on what teachers should teach their students. He issued his challenge to teachers in 1932, as the United States faced a major economic depression and as Hitler and Nazi Germany was rising to power. He felt that education should provide students with the tools to be exemplary citizens in society to help the others and give towards the general good as well as find their own happiness. It is the job of the teacher to help their students develop character and morality. Teachers should prepare their students to be sympathetic and empathetic.…

The first method Bazelon suggests to limit bullying is “the garden” metaphor. Like a garden that has to slowly grow in order to flourish, an emphasis on moral and character development should be put into the fabric of the community, replacing the hostility or aggressiveness, which is created by child academic or social competition. Another technique Bazelon discuses to diminish bullying are the bystander’s influence. She points out that both cyber and face-to-face bullying typically occur in front of an audience and on average only twenty percent of bystanders stand up to the bullies. Bazelon notes that stereotypical Hollywood-heroic actions are not needed to stand up to a bully.…

After last week’s writing, I found myself in quite a fog of insecurity. Thankfully the most recent installment of YITE brought me back to the sunny side of teaching philosophy. Reading about the art of teaching was rather inspiring even. The quote from the text, “approaching instruction in a variety of ways to provide multiple paths for students to both learn the content and develop the skills of the curriculum is artistry (pg 147),” caught my attention. Often in my life I have gotten the impression that some people consider the position of a teacher as that of merely a figurehead, an adult to put in front of a group of kids to keep them occupied.…
