President Obama has once again defied the constitutional limits placed on his power. This time, is a directive stating public schools should allow transgender students access to the bathrooms and locker rooms— that align with their gender identity. Many conservatives which include concerned parents, have already raised their voice to prevent this law from expanding and forcing schools all over the country to abide it. It is a controversial law that needs to be the decision of our state not the federal government. Therefore, I believe this directive needs to be revoked. According to the Obama administration, this law’s main purpose is to ensure that transgender students enjoy a supportive and nondiscriminatory school environment. It is being praised by LGBT groups who call it a “validation of transgender rights.” Supporters of this law claim that title IX is being enforced which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex. They are praising the federal government for a decision that should be made by our state. The U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King Jr. stated, "We must ensure that our young people know that whoever they are or wherever they come from, they have the opportunity to get a great education in an environment free from discrimination, harassment and violence" (Hadden ).
