The Pros And Cons Of Vehicles

The public is the single most important factor in designing a product for the market. It is even put as number one in the engineering code of ethics for software engineers. As an engineer you have a responsibility to society to make the product safe. Vehicles can be dangerous machines but with the technology available today engineers have made these vehicles safer than ever before. I believe that there is still room for improvement and it must be exploited to the fullest extent to keep society as safe as possible. All vehicles should be as safe as possible so that the driver, as well as those around them, can be safe and simply focus on getting to where they are heading. Transition? That is why there are laws enacted to help keep people safe. But I believe that it is an engineer’s duty to be on the cutting edge of technology and be creative in their designs to keep people safe. A law cannot be enacted if there aren’t any products out available on the market. For example I would like to see law mandate that cars be installed with backup cameras. Rear view visibility systems have been in cars for more than ten years. They can be acquired aftermarket or be purchased as an option on vehicles. If put into law it is estimated that it would add less than one hundred fifty dollars to the cost of manufacturing a vehicle or if the vehicle already has a screen onboard it would cost less than an additional fifty dollars. This low cost feature could save thousands of dollars in medical cost from people being hit while backing up. It would also save money from people backing into objects and damaging their vehicle or other personal property. You may think that since backing up a vehicle is slowly that it doesn’t hurt many people. The fact of the matter is that thirty one percent of deaths in children under five is from vehicles backing into them and killing them. Harriet Peterson is an elderly woman that spent nine days in the hospital and now has her pelvis held together with metal because she was struck by a vehicle reversing from the curb. Such a small device could have prevented these accidents from occurring and I believe that everyone will agree a child’s life or that a woman being put in the hospital and now having trouble walking for the rest of her life is more important than a measly fifty dollars that it would cost to install the rear view visibility system. Simply spending fifty dollars to outfit a vehicle with this system could prevent over two hundred unnecessary deaths every year in the United States

According to a recent report, about 94% of driving-related deaths are caused as a result of human error. This technological invention is able to virtually eliminate human error in driving accidents, granting it the potential to save many lives. Additionally, traffic and health-damaging fuel emissions may be reduced if these vehicles eventually result in widespread…

Sci-fi Stories and Modern Technology Collide Recently in California two separate accidents involving self-driving cars have brought up many questions on the safety of this new technology. Many people could be reminded of Ray Bradbury's short story The Veldt when thinking of accidents involving new technology such as self-driving vehicles. In the short story the children use their Happy Life Home (Bradburry) against their parents, ultimately leading to their demise. The self-driving car accident and the accident involving the Happy Life Home (Bradburry) in The Veldt are terrible tragedies, but will ultimately lead to an improvement in the technology.…

My potential controversy that i have been thinking about deals with self-driving trucks; specifically self-driving eighteen-wheelers. The highway I-35 runs right through the city of Austin and it is not uncommon to hear about car crashes that happen on it. Many times these crashes become fatal when an eighteen-wheeler is involved. A truck company based in San Francisco called Otto, and many other companies has started testing these self driving trucks. Self-driving trucks, in comparison to human driven trucks will be “safer and less costly” a few years down the road.…

There are already self-driving features in the cars, because when people define self-driving vehicles half of the meaning goes to the vehicle that can control steering, brake, and speeding. The ethics behind this concept arose when they concept of decision making during spontaneous situations that require ethics and not just technology. This problem suggests that a self- driven car would not be able to ethically react to a scenario where a problem such as: someone jumping in front of the vehicle, an animal crossing the road, or any other object that could cause a sever crash. Knowingly endangering other people based solely on feeling uncomfortable is unethical. Fortunately, this sort of attitude does not seem to be prevailing in regards to self-driving cars. In most states, legal scholars conclude that self-driving cars are “probably legal”[9], though they recommend that states update the language of their laws to specifically allow for self-driving cars. A risk to the widespread adoption of self-driving cars is that an accident where a self-driving car is at fault causes an overreaction by governments or the public before self-driving cars are seen as a part of everyday life. The first chance of this happening occurred when the Google self-driving car got in an accident a municipal bus[10].…
