As the Brady Campaign continues to bring in bold statistics of gun violence and details of their public opinion polls, the latest of these polls finds that the public opinion supports gun control.
Solid majorities of the American people want to have a voice when speaking about gun control. Although not all people want sticker gun laws in the united states, most people support that a law be made requiring background checks on people buying guns at gun shows or online (83%). Ultimately, only 13% of people believe that guns sales should be made less strict. The public as a whole favors that a federal law should be created stating that background checks must be completed on all potential gun buyers (92%). This issue isn’t a matter of political parties. Gun violence is a public health issue and to fix it we must make a public health approach. 100,000 people are shot in our nation every year and 30, 000 of those result in death. The root of the problem is the way that guns are so easily attainable. In the United States alone, guns are so easily purchased that they are smuggled out of the United States to other countries such as Mexico. Background checks are not even accessed in over 40% of gun sales. Guns lead to domestic violence; an intimate partner murders 574 women each year, violence towards people of color (gang violence).
