I think I fell in love with the idea of a career in public health before I ever even knew what public health was. Upon entering my undergraduate career, I had a profound passion for the medical field and had hopes of pursuing a medical degree. Although I have always had a large-hearted ambition for helping others and a dedication to the medical field, the more classes I took at the collegiate level, the less passionate I became about the life I had previously envisioned. I was continuously fascinated by the applications of mathematics to biology and moreover their translation to medicine. I fell in love with the idea of modeling biological phenomenon and understanding the dynamic systems this entails. However, with this new approach, I began seeing health and medicine as not just something that begins and ends when you enter and leave a physician’s office, but rather a system of constantly changing variables that effect the health of all at a level I never had considered before. …show more content…
With this change of pace, I felt like I lost my sense of direction. I knew I was still passionate about the healthcare field, but did not know how my new found interest could translate into a career. I loved the idea of focusing on the multidisciplinary level of population health while integrating social, political and economic implications and upon showing interest I had a professor suggest I read And the Band Played On by Randy Shilts. The book left a lasting impression on myself and my future aspirations in the field of medicine. Cutting precisely on the lines, making sure I didn’t stray and accidently cut out part of an article, I carefully extracted the Sudoku puzzle from the daily newspaper before my father came to the breakfast table to read it. Then, working as fast as I could, I began deciphering the puzzle, eliminating numbers I knew didn’t belong in a certain box and writing, in tiny print, all the numbers that could potentially fit. Gradually, as the pieces came together, the completed puzzle unfolded. I glanced at the clock, scarfed down my cereal (which had gone soggy), and raced out the door just in time to catch the bus. During my hour long bus ride to school I would reflect on how I had solved the puzzle, wondering if there was a better way to approach…

I’ve always loved the sound of rain. Its soft patter against my window releases me from the stresses of college applications, if only for a moment. Then, as quickly as it came, the rain stops its descent upon my window and retreats; growing up in Central Florida, I have been well accustomed to erratic weather patterns such as the rain coming and going in a moment’s notice. Florida’s weather has taught me a valuable lesson over the years: life can be as unpredictable as the weather.…

My pursuit of a medical degree is greatly strengthened by the Columbia University Public Health Scholars Program (SPHSP). Prior to matriculation from the program my source of motivation held no true direction, I wanted to simply “help people”. During SPHSP I was exposed to federally qualified health centers (FQHC) and my eyes were opened to new medium to help people. I admired the measures that FQHC put in place to effectively serve a population of people that, under normal circumstances, would not be able pursue healthcare. FQHCs aligned closely to the sense of equity that I began to develop as I was exposed to communities suffering from health disparities over the course of the internship.…
