Medical ethics have been passed down through the centuries, specifically, the Hippocratic Oath (Bjelica, 2017). However, public health ethics is a fairly new topic that has gained much attention over the past few years (Schmidt, 2015). Medical ethics deals with the individual (Williams & Torrens, 2008). This includes informed consent, the freedom of choice, and self-control of the individual. Public health ethics is about the community and the population. There can be conflicts between the two as they each serve a different topic. One conflict that is currently being worked through is the AIDS dilemma. With medical ethics, they have to respect the confidentiality of the patient. Often times, if the patient feels this right may be violated
