I saw over twelve couples at the mall, and only one of those couples were in a same sex relationship. The one same sex couple I saw were holding hands and genuinely looked very happy together. Another thing I noticed was that they were not any LGBT couples of color publicly displaying any affection. Just based on the numbers you would expect to see more homosexual relationships in a crowded mall on a Friday night, but there is still a large amount of people in the United States that do not agree with the homosexual lifestyle. The culture of a town largely determines if there will a positive or negative attitude towards a same sex relationships. The values varies from city to city in the United States. Cities in the South or even in Indiana are widely conservative and a same sex couple can experience verbal or even worst physical abuse just for holding one another’s hands. Orland Park is not known for being an intolerant town, so homosexual relationships are treated just as any other relationships. I believe that people in homosexual relationships do not “show off” as much people in heterosexual relationships because out of fear of resentment from others. According to my research five out of the thirteen couples I witnessed were in an exogamous relationship. All five of the couples each exhibited a form of affection towards each other. From a peck on the cheek to the sweet act of holding each other’s hands. Exogamous relationships were not always widespread as they are now. It took until the 1960s for the United States to repeal any laws that forbid any one for marrying someone outside of their race. Now exogamous relationships are more prevalent. An interracial couple can express through love for each other with affection without fearing any sort of punishment. There is still some stigma associated with interracial relationships today, but that type of thinking is not as prevalent. Exogamous couple do not face the same challenges that homosexual couples
