In this article, “Public Discourses About Teenage Pregnancy: Disruption, Restorations, and Ideology,” Jennifer J. Bute and Laura D. Russell both on the Department of Communication Studies, discusses the hard times that mothers have to go through. The article talks about a celebrity teen mom, Jamie Lynn Spears and what she had to go through as a famous figure who got pregnant. In this article the authors say, “As media cast a shameful spotlight on young women, females are commonly portrayed as responsible for poor choices and ‘wrong’ actions” (713). Not only did Jamie Lynn Spears get judged for being a teen mothers, she also got judged by media and she was portrayed in a bad way. The media does this all the time, they exaggerate the stories of many topics to make them seem worse than they were. Jamie Lynn Spears mother was there to support her, “I was in shock. I just kept saying, you’re—I think I was just in shock. And then I started to cry. And then she started consoling me, you know, at that point’ But after her initial shock, Lynne was reportedly very supportive of her daughter’s situation” (715, 716). Mothers should be there for their daughters when something like a pregnancy comes up, because the mothers has experience and can help the teen mom more than anyone else could. I did not have to experience a teen pregnancy, but my mother always told me that she would be there for me if I needed help with a baby and also my father was very supportive about the situation as well.
