Public Child Welfare System

Improved Essays
Training is pivotal to the development of proficient foster care personnel and to attaining outcomes of safety, permanency, and welfare for children entrusted to the care of the public child welfare system. Child welfare caseworkers should be entirely familiarized with their role and equipped with the intelligence and abilities necessary to perform effectively. This commands competency-based pre-service and in-service training that is conjoined to supervision; designed to worker needs; and comprises opportunities for experiential learning, shadowing, and coaching. When employees have the chance to develop greater abilities and enhance their effectiveness, they are more likely to experience job fulfillment and remain dedicated to their trade.

There is very little cross training and sharing of information between Student Service departments. These departments work autonomously from one another and have no real understanding of each other’s process/procedures. When it comes to serving foster youth students the assumption made by staff are requirements are the same across departments. This is not true and has led to major miscommunication of information to foster youth students. This miscommunication can lead to prolonged financial aid disbursements, priority registration denial, unavailability of counseling appointments, and denied access to DSPS services.…

Occasionally, a child abuse or neglect case will result in child fatality that draws attention from the press. The media then exploits said child abuse case and the case worker is usually blamed for the child’s outcome, no matter what their efforts were to help the child prior to his or her death. Despite a social worker’s best intentions, they are not always capable of properly caring for children in need. There’s no denying the rising issue of child abuse and domestic violence in the United States, for example, according to the Child Help Organization, “a report of child abuse is made every ten seconds” (“Child…
