Public Art Analysis

Our purposed public artwork location was decided on to be located in front of the Rogue Ales Gallery and Restaurant in the Bay front area of Newport, Oregon. Our artwork will be a sculpture in the round, giant beer mug that says “Oregon Micro Brews,” in moss, on the mug. The mug itself will be made out of concrete to utilize the porosity of the medium. The artwork will be sitting on a pedestal of sorts with a plaque that lists all the microbreweries in Oregon. The function of the piece is to bring awareness, respect, and regional pride in what Oregonians have accomplished; Having more microbreweries, per capita, then any other state. The artwork will also recognize the talent, art, time, and creativeness that goes into making microbrews for the world to enjoy. …show more content…
We started with the idea that we wanted to recognize some group from the Pacific Northwest, since this is the greatest area on earth! We all agreed that the coast would be the perfect location, after numerous other locals where dismissed. I suggested to the group that we should use moss in the artwork (I have a new found love for the stuff after learning how amazing it is in my Ecology class). Then it was suggested that the medium should be concrete so the moss had something porous to stick to. The idea of any paint or any other substance was dismissed because of the high winds and sand storms in the

Public art is all around us, and when you take a moment to look around you’ll find some amazing pieces. While walking around downtown there is always one mural that catches my eye every time. Located on the back side of the Burton Cummings Theatre (formerly known as the Walker Theatre, 364 Smith Street.) is an untitled piece by Winston Leathers (1932-2004). Maybe it’s the vibrant colours, or the fact that I spent just over 14 hours waiting outside the theatre two years ago waiting to see my favourite band perform. Either way, I can’t help but do a double take when I happen to walk by.…

1 – In his study of abstract art, David Halle sought to answer multiple questions about abstract art, specifically the ownership and opinions pertaining to it. First, Halle looked at who had abstract art in their homes; determining if the ownership of abstract art indicated social class, he then moved on to more subjective questions such as opinions of abstract art. Halle asked questions about who disliked and liked abstract art for a few different reasons; to learn the specific thinking behind these preferences and to learn if these preferences were linked to knowledge or perceptions within different social classes. In addition, Halle sought to refute Pierre Bourdieu’s claim that only people with cultural capital like or understand abstract…

The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art consists of an abundant amount of unique and interesting pieces of art. While touring the museum, I found several pieces of art in which were rather amazing at how they were created; one could tell a lot of thought and hours of dedication were put into each piece. While there were so many pieces to choose from, I chose two pieces which stood out to me the most to discuss in my paper, one is The Jackleg Testament, Part One Jack and Eve: A Woodcut Motion Picture and the second one is Still Life with Papayas and Clementines; both of which are richly unique in their own way. The Jackleg Testament, Part One Jack and Eve: A Woodcut Motion Picture is exactly what is stated; it is a movie that is in fact an hour and two minutes long.…

When thinking about this topic and how to address it I first began to really try and understand the meaning of macabre. The official definition is “disturbing and horrifying because of involvement with or depiction of death and injury” and its implication can be clearly seen in the images we have viewed in class. The whole idea of the macabre is thought to have come from a dark time in history and represents more than simply grisly images. The artwork I decided to truly focus on is Hans Baldung Grien, Three Ages of Woman and Death, Germany, c. 1510.…

This approach of heavily focusing on the premium aspect of their brands may separate the younger market segment, more sensitive to cost, from trying and becoming loyal consumers.…

    Street Art Essay

Graffiti was once labeled as street art which was frequently a prominent problem in urban cities; defacing or “tagging” public and private property was against the law. As time as evolved, so has the street art culture. Today, street art is one of most sought after and creative outlets for local artists. The culture around street art can be interesting in the fact that artists build their names and reputation with one piece of work at a time; sometimes when it starts to take over the city it gets the attention it has been wanting. Street art is now very innovative featuring many different art styles and often makes a commentary on a social issue and if it does not, then it was created to help change the city.…

Throughout this course I have gained more of an appreciation for artwork and the artists that create them. I have also gained an appreciation for the people that try to define what art is in general or more specifically what makes good art. We have read great thinkers and their philosophies on this, and the fact that even people of such great intelligence can disagree on the subject proves how challenging it can be. By reading the opinions of these great thinkers, and by discussing their thought with our class, I feel I am in a much better place as to define what makes good art myself. I define art as anything created by someone that inspires another to appreciation.…
