Prior to the scanning, the probe is coated with ultrasound gel and applied on the abdomen in the midline just above the pubic bone. The scanning should be done slowly as this will allow the probe to accurately detect and outline the bladder. To help obtain better results when scanning, the patient will be assisted into a comfortable position -lying down with the head slightly elevated. The ultrasound gel promotes the conduction of ultrasound waves when the probe comes into contact with skin. The probe should be placed 3 centimeters above the pubic bone. If the probe is placed 3 centimeters above the pubic bone without angling towards the feet, it is possible to miss the small post void residual bladder. If the probe is angled under the pubic
