This psychological report will examine post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD. PTSD is a psychological disorder that is very common in people who have experienced a traumatic event or have a previous mental health disorder. There are different ways to treat it, and different ways to develop the illness. In this report, the following questions will be addressed: What is PTSD? What populations are at higher risk of getting PTSD? Should you take drugs for PTSD? Is there more risk for PTSD than affective illness? Usually, when someone has PTSD, they typically try to do the nondrug treatment first to avoid the symptoms and the cost of them. Drugs are mostly used if the first option is not available to them or they tried it and it is not working for them personally. sometimes they use both methods depending on the patient. The dosage of the drug also varies from patient to patient, because if someone has very severe PTSD symptoms, they will most likely need a higher dosage of the drug. These drugs need to be used as little as possible, though, because “Substance abuse is also much more common in people with PTSD” (Aldermen, Marwood, and McCarthy, 2009). If the drug is not working after many high dosages, then the drug needs to stop being used immediately because this could bring more harm to the patient and could even cause them to develop substance abuse issues. This is the best way to treat PTSD in patients who also have an affective illness. People who develop PTSD in addition to their affective disorder may not have been traumatized at all and they only have PTSD as a result of other previous illnesses. Whether they were traumatized or not will determine the type of treatment that they are given. Conclusion In this report, I went over what PTSD is and the symptoms of the mental health disorder, the different populations that are at higher risk of developing PTSD, whether or not patients with PTSD should take drugs for it, and the higher risk of PTSD if you already have an affective illness. This information could be beneficial to doctors and psychologists when trying to figure out how to treat PTSD in patients and understanding that if they have a patient with affective illnesses, they may also have a risk of developing PTSD and that is something they may need to look out for.
