The novel symbolizes post-traumatic stress disorder and the effect of actions taking place during war.…

For this assignment, my group’s topic was Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and how it is prevalent in the novel, ‘Speak’ by Laurie Hall Anderson. My responsibility was to do the facts and statistics slide and to do the two characters that experienced/influenced PTSD slide. While working on the assignment, I did run into some challenges. The biggest being that it was hard to find facts and statistics on PTSD that were Canadian and relatively recent. I ran into this issue because many websites that I found focused more on America, on worldwide facts and statistics, and the information was quite outdated.…

Those with PTSD show an altered chemical formation of cortisol in the brain, which deals with acute stress. “Cortisol is normally released as anti-stress hormone that shuts off biological reactions”(Van Der Kolk, 2002, p.5). Those with PTSD have low levels of cortisol resulting in their biological reactions of norepinephrine to be released. Those engaging in a state of high arousal will often remember “emotionally charged experiences”(Van Der Kolk, 2002, p5).…
