To be honest, I was only inducted into Phi Theta Kappa during this past spring semester. I was honored to be inducted because I am the first one in my family to go to college. This means a lot to me and my family, be recognized for my academic achievements. I hope to be able to remain involved in honors societies such as Phi Theta Kappa throughout my career at UIC. Though my experience with PTK is limited I still have several ways in which I plan to contribute by helping fellow students, being involved in German language and studies, participating in athletics.
I have come to realize that college is not only about achieving personal academic goals, but also about helping fellow students along the way. In the last two years, I have developed various study and time management skills that have been essential and beneficial in terms of my academics and personal growth/life. By discovering who I am and what my passions are I am certain that I am capable of helping freshmen navigate their way through their first year of college. There have been a handful of students

I started playing baseball as a young girl in Germany and by the time I was 15 years old I was playing major league Softball. At the age of 17 I was the awarded Most Valuable Player at State Championship, Hessen, Germany. Though it has been quite some time since I set foot on a softball field, I do wish to try out for the Softball team at UIC. Even if I do not make it on the team, I do wish to be involved in sports, especially softball and baseball since they have been a significant part of my life. I believe that sports teach individuals much more than just how hit or catch a ball. Sports teach us that life is not centered around us, but centered on us and everyone around us. They teach us how to be a team player, and that in life it is okay to lose sometimes to be able to grow and develop into the player/person/individual we are destined to

“Although many people assume that softball was derived from baseball, the sport’s first game actually came about because of a football game” (History 1). Softball was invented on Thanksgiving day in 1887 in Chicago, Illinois by a group of Yale and Harvard alumni. They were all just sitting around waiting for the outcome of the Yale vs. Harvard football game, when one of the alumni threw a boxer's glove at a harvard supporter. The supporter swung at the glove and everyone was interested by the act of the stick hitting the glove. George Hancock, a reporter for the Chicago Board of Trade, yelled out, “Play Ball”, and the first softball game began.…

I play on the women's collegiate softball team at St. Thomas University. I have been playing softball since I could walk and, along with every other athlete, my dream is to play on the biggest and brightest stage possible. For softball that is the NCAA College World Series. Unfortunately, I don't have the ability to make millions of dollars playing professional softball like many other professional athletes. This is it for me because college is the highest level of softball I will play in my life and I don't want to settle at a school where I know my athletic ability and hard work could get me so much further.…

A topic that I find engaging and feel like I lose track of time when I talk about is softball it's something I love and can talk forever about. Softball is basically my life almost every day i'm practicing some how if it's at actual practice with my travel team or running plays through my head every night and thinking about how i can improve myself. When anyone comes and talks to me about games or anything to do with softball I immediately lose my train of thought and become engaged in the conversation and can go on for hours and feel like I've only talked for a few minutes. Softball is something I turn to when I'm mad, sad, or happy no matter what kind of day I've had going to practice or a game just makes it feel like there's nothing else in the world. As soon as I step onto the field the rest of the world just disappears and doesn't exist and the only thing that matters is what's inside the fields fence.…

While growing up, sports have always been a big part of my life. At the age of only six years old, my parents first signed me up for coach pitch softball. Little did they know that I was going to fall in love with the game and that they were going to have to spend countless hours at softball fields during the spring each year watching me play. Being so young when I first started playing, winning and losing did not matter at all. As long as I got to throw, hit, and catch the ball, I was happy.…

Being a student athlete is a wonderful thing in high school, despite a lot of people only acknowledge the athlete part and not the student part. I believe that academics come first and if a high school student wants to be an athlete, then getting good grades should be a requirement. It should be mandatory for teachers and coaches to check the grades of student athletes weekly to determine whether students are performing academically well or not. The students that aren’t doing well should be dismissed from any further games and practices until their grades improve. It is important that student athletes maintain good grades because the work that they put into their school performance carries with them through life, putting too much of an emphasis…
