Psychotic Criminal Traits

Improved Essays
Although Meursault falls under two traits of psychotic criminal behavior, he does not have the other personality traits that psychotic criminals are seen to have: violence and risk-taking. One instance where he avoided being violent was when he was with Raymond and Raymond’s friend, Masson, while taking a stroll on the beach. The three were walking when they came across two Arabs who they initiated a fight with. While Raymond and Masson fought the Arabs, Meursault was told to “stand by to help if another one comes up,” (Camus, 1989) and that’s exactly what he did. Instead of stepping in to help Raymond, who left the scene with a gash on his arm from one of the Arab’s knife, he stood back to warn him by yelling instead. This also proves that

The most incredible characteristic of a sociopath is their complete absence of empathy, lack of conscience, remorse, guilt or shame. Sociopaths are like chameleons, they can easily depict real remorse but the picture they show outside has little similarity to the reality that is going on behind the screen, their reality is well hidden, and only known by the sociopaths themselves. “Depending on the authorities quoted, sociopaths may constitute up to 35 percent of the prison population and are responsible for as much as 80 to 90 percent of all crimes” ("NCJRS Abstract - National Criminal Justice Reference Service"). Consequently, for these people who do not give a care what others think of them, just a simple public shaming may not be a complete…

Elements of deviant and abnormal behavior associated with white-collar crime Deviant behavior is defined as any human activity that violates social norms. Social norms are the basic framework that help to keep our society organized and functioning. People that don’t or can’t abide by those norms are present in every aspect of humanity. In The Stranger, Meursault very rarely used his mind to distinguish between actions he should or should not have committed, if at all. Meursault thought nothing of writing the threatening letter to the girlfriend of his friend and neighbor, Raymond, except that he was performing a task in order to build his friendship with Raymond. He did not once consider the repercussions of the letter on the relationship between Raymond and the girlfriend of Raymond. Meursault also failed to consider consequences when he murdered the Arab man who, along with other Arabs, had attacked Meursault and his friends on the beach earlier in the day. For whatever reason, Meursault did not think about his punishment for murdering the Arab man before or during the action.…

Source of Terror Many people in the world today commit crimes. However, for each person, the reason for their actions varies drastically. Many people, who are occasionally referred to as “psychopaths”, tend to react to situations of stress or concern rather differently than most people would, and the act sometimes results in a crime. But how do these problems emerge? Do they come alone from heritage, or perhaps their childhood life raising?…

In the novel The Stranger, the author Albert Camus emphasizes the absurdities of life and he does this by striking the audience with Meursault’s blunt nature and his embodiment of existentialism. The novel explores existentialist ideology which represent the philosophy of life essentially being “pointless” .Since the message of existentialism can have a powerful negative connotation it can be surprising to understand how Meursault can be considered anything close to free especially , considering the freedom he gained happened after he committed murder but that’s what happened considering the sequence of events , since his routine hindered him from the enlightenment he gained from being captured. The Webster dictionary defines freedom as “the power or right to act, speak,…

I do not believe that all criminal acts are symptomatic of psychopathology. There are various reasons as to why people commit crimes. Yes, I do believe "normal" people commit crimes too. I think often times when it comes to larger, more serious, crimes there is a higher chance of psychopathology being a cause. However, crimes are also committed by "normal" people for reasons such as hanging around the wrong crowd, being in the "wrong place at the wrong time", depression, need for attention, or even just to help supply their needs.…

When asked whether or not he returned to the beach with the clear intention of killing the Arab, he answers: “ ‘No,’ [...] well, then, why was I armed and why did I return to precisely that spot? I said it just happened that way” (Camus 88). Meursault blames his actions on the circumstance, and does not quite accept the responsibility to which he is introduced. By the end, Meursault has fully evolved into an absurdist figure, as seen by his thoughts in the last pages of the book. As he is awaiting his execution, he confesses that in order “for everything to be consummated, for me to feel less alone, I had only to wish that there be a large crowd of spectators the day of my execution and that they greet me with cries of hate” (Camus 123).…

According to Jim Fallon, professor of neuroscience at the University of California, the genetic basis of serial killers is different from the rest of the population, even though there is a pattern among them. Something that has to be taken on count is that one of the main violent genes, such as the MAO-A gene (also known as the warrior gene) are found in variants within the average population. Some people have it, because it is sex-linked and considering that is located on an X chromosome, it can only be obtained from the mother. This is perhaps one of the reasons why there are more male-to-female serial killers, because the daughters receive an X chromosome from the mother and one from the father, so this gene is diluted.…

As the training officer for my department, when I begin my lecture I would want to actively engage my audience. Thus, the first item on my agenda would be to have everyone participate in the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator Personality test. Once they have completed the test and understand what their personality type is I would then tell them which crime that personality type is likely to commit as the research I have found online indicates for it. Once, they know what crime has been linked to their personality type I would then ask them if they are guilty of that crime. I would then start my lecture by identifying the different personality disorders and explaining that an individual's personality is just one factor that contributes to crime and…
