The research for this project involves a series of primary sources from the Sexual Freedom League’s file at Indiana University’s Kinsey Institute. The materials I found in the SFL box span the time period of 1971-1977, with the majority coming from the early part of the decade. They can roughly be generalized as 1) internal notes, memos, letters, and flyers that pertain to the work and perspectives of the organization itself, and 2) newspaper clippings, articles, pamphlets, brochures, and publications collected from other external resources that have to do with a much broader range of issues related to gender and sexuality. I use these sources throughout my essay to achieve three main goals: to contextualize the league in the broader context…

Rape shield laws limit the use of evidence of a victim’s past sexual history that might undermine the victim’s credibility. The purpose of rape shield laws is to protect victims from emotional distress when cross-examined about their sexual history (Brody & Acker, 2010). Courts feel the victim’s sexual history has little relevance and the humiliation and fear of being questioned about their past sexual conduct might prevent some victims to come forward (Brody & Acker, 2010).. In Tennessee, Rape shield laws were adapted in response to a sexist view that a woman who had sexual relations in the past was more likely to have consensual sex with a specific criminal defendant (Brody & Acker, 2010).…

I would like to say that sexual assaults are a substantially real catastrophe that occurs all over the country with 35% of cases going unreported. According to the FBI, 8% of sexual assault cases were found to be faulty. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_accusation_of_rape) With that being said, take a glance at the numbers, eight out of 100 men who are accused of sexual assault did, in fact, not commit the accusation that was presented in front of them. That is a frightening idea to think about, that perhaps eight men were wrongfully imprisoned or punished for crimes that they did are not responsible for.…

I believe I have lived a very sheltered life after learning about some of these topics, because I hadn’t even heard of most of them. But human sexuality involves much more than those three things. Three of the major topics that have made me really think about how uneducated I was in regards to human sexuality were sexual birth defects, gender identity and gender roles, and sexual assault.…
