Psychopathy Diagnosed The introduction of psychopathy as a diagnosis may have been the result of the English Mental Health Act of 1959 that legally defined psychopathic disorder as a psychological disability requiring treatment that includes traits of aggressiveness or irresponsibility (Blackburn, 1988). The purpose of the legal definition of psychopathy was to differentiate between non-psychotic and psychotic criminals (Blackburn, 1988). However, the psychiatric field refuted this concept because there were no empirically supported criteria for diagnosing psychopathic disorder, and instead suggested redefining the concept as antisocial personality (Blackburn, 1988). In 1964, McCord and McCord clinically defined psychopath as an antisocial…

II. Kennett, “Autism, Empathy and Moral Agency” Kennett claims that psychopaths are amoral most likely due to their lack of empathy which is also an impairment in individuals with autism. However, it does not seem to be the case that autistic individuals are also amoral. Kennett claims that “an examination of moral thinking in high-functioning autistic people supports a Kantian rather than Humean account of moral agency.”…

The term antisocial personality reflects an evolution through a number of terms, the most widely known of which has undoubtedly been “psychopath.” In about 1800, Philippe Pinel coined the term Manie sans delire to reflect the fact that these individuals manifest extremely deviant behavior but show no evidence of delusions, hallucinations, or other cognitive disorders. This general conceptualization grew in acceptance, and late in the 19th century the label psychopathic inferiority, introduced…
