Psychopaths In Prisons

Decent Essays
Deceitful, cunning, narcissistic, irresponsible, superficially charming, taking needless risks, and displaying little empathy, psychopaths are individuals prone to criminal lifestyles and high recidivism rates. Psychopaths’ criminality and recidivism account for why a fifth of inmates are psychopaths. Although prisons attempt to rehabilitate inmates, psychopaths pose a difficult problem for legal sentencing and rehabilitation: a psychopath’s brain functions differently than the average brain, and because psychopaths don’t process information normally, they can legally plea diminished capacity. Moreover, they are difficult to rehabilitate, because of their abnormal brain anatomy. Unfortunately, an even more pressing issue exists. The scientific

While psychopaths are completely in touch with reality with every action they do. Another inaccurate assumption is that all psychopaths are serial killers, terrorists, or criminals in general. On many occasions I have read articles by psychopaths themselves or about psychopaths that are gentle people and have caused no harm to others. “Many psychopaths are criminals, but many others manage to remain out of prison, using their charm and chameleon-like coloration to cut a wide swathe through society and leaving a wake of ruined lives behind them” (Hare). It seems Mark Nichols disagrees with Hare according to this statement: “Many psychopaths find wealth and success as highly manipulative corporate careerists, as thugs on professional sports teams or as unscrupulous…

My best recommendation to President Obama is to find a way to stop the crime cycle of violence and arrest associated with illegal drug use. It doesn’t do any good to arrest these drug dealers and users for them to just end up being released to do it again. This ends up costing the state a lot of money just to house these inmates and increases overcrowding in our prisons. Inmates in state prisons for drugs has dramatically increased from 19,000 in the 1980s to 264,000 in 2000. Instead of throwing them in jail, let’s offer them a different option like rehab which in turn can help reduce our overcrowded prisons and possibly reduce overall drug use.…

Most individuals assume that once an inmate is sentenced to time in prison, their violent actions would be depleted. However, multiple articles, news stories, and professional statistics prove otherwise. In fact, chaos appeared in the South Carolina prison riot, overpowering the force of state officials; leaving seven dead and seventeen injuries (Fausset). “ State officials Monday blamed the carnage on the turf war between gangs over territory, money and contraband items like cellphones” (Kinnard). There are countless factors contributing to the mentality of these individuals .…

According to Seiter, “mentally ill inmates are more likely than other inmates to have disciplinary problems while in prison. ”(P. 253) I think mental illness in prisons/jail has been a pandemic for criminal justice system in the United States for the past 10 years. Many offenders, who do not come in with mentally ill, will have some kind of illness at the end of their incarceration.…

Although psychopathy has several controversial issues, overall increased resources dedicated to improving the standards at which we can assess psychopaths can improve their behaviour over time. Whether it is dealing with children and being able to monitor them without segregating them, assessing normal psychopaths to determine specific neurological basis for their behaviours or simply having a clear diagnostic tool to be able to clearly define what constitutes a psychopath. By clearly being able to determine and diagnose a psychopath (with the DSM-V) will increase the ability to be able to measure psychopathic tendencies and in turn significantly advance our ability to manage and treat psychopathy. Ultimately, implementing this would tackle most of the contentions that stem from psychopathy and therefore dramatically improve society for the…

Many prisoners that reside in the United States are not being treated fairly. The treatment that some prisoners in the US receive violates the Eighth Amendment, the amendment that strongly goes against using cruel and unusual punishment when it comes to punishing someone. And with prisons being overcrowded many prisoners have poor living arrangements where there are thirteen people or more in one room. (“Prisoners’ Rights:”). This shows that some prisoners are being denied basic human rights and that the prison is no longer a place where a criminal could do their time and rehabilitate.…

One expert in the subject of psychopathy offers a full explanation of its biological basis. It is suggested that amygdala dysfunction is a key neural system that is associated with psychopathy (Blair et al., 1999). Neuroimaging studies have confirmed this. Further, there is evidence the frontal cortex could be dysfunctional (Soderstrom et al., 2000). They found that “psychopathy was associated with an increased ratio between the dopamine metabolite HVA and the serotonin metabolite 5-HIAA.…
