Mental Status Exam
Guy is a 54 year-old European-American. He is currently unemployed. Guy is heterosexual and married. Guy described himself as “spiritual but not religious”. He was self-referred for counseling. He appeared in a casual outfit, appropriate for his age, well groomed. His facial expression was preoccupied. His eye contact was fleeting. Guy bites his nails. His affect was appropriate to situation and was stable. Guy was guarded in describing the situation. He had long pauses when talking about his sexual life. His mood was slightly irritable and pessimistic. Guy appeared preoccupied and anxious. He was coherent in his speech and appeared to be of average intelligence.
Guy was alert and oriented x 4, and there were no signs of perceptual distortions.
Symptomatology
Guy reported several symptoms. First, he reported that he “feels bad”, “upset”, and “very discouraged” about his job loss and quest and the financial situation that resulted from it. …show more content…
“Things have been going downhill since then”. Guy demonstrates dysphoria more than symptoms of Major Depressive Disorder or episode. The period is more than two weeks but aside from criterion A3 (weight gain) and A4 (insomnia) that fit for that diagnosis nothing show in the intake proof for the others symptoms. His anxiety seems to be linked to the financial situation the family is in since he lost his job. More information regarded suffering from excessive anxiety would be needed to lean toward Generalized anxiety disorder. At this time his concern seems legitimate as the family is now living on his wife’s salary and their savings and do not appear out of proportion. He fits the criterion C1 (feeling keyed up) and C6 (sleep disturbance) but no others are demonstrated in the
