According to Lynn Keegan (, “Nurses have come a long way in a few short decades. In the past our attention focused on physical, mental and emotional healing. Now we talk of healing your life, healing the environment, and healing the planet.” (site nursetogether.com) For nursing to heal physically, mentally, and expanding that healing to the environment and the planet, another field of practice aides in this goal: psychology. Many professions in the world are linked and intertwined, two of which are psychology and nursing. Psychology is applicable in nursing in multiple ways. The most appropriate way to begin is to give some background to describe what psychology and nursing is on their own apart from each other. Psychology is the scientific …show more content…
It would be safe to assume that society would most likely be plagued with health problems without nursing.
Considering both fields, how does psychology play an important role in nursing? They go hand in hand. Psychology and nursing are basically peanut butter and jelly because nursing without psychology would, to be quite honest, be disastrous just like jelly without peanut butter.
The first involvement of psychology in nursing, is the courses an aspiring nurse takes. Amongst other courses, psychology is one of the many subjects that aspiring nurses must study, exposing them to the hard facts of how humans work and why they work the way they do (site nursing world.org). “…there can be no health without mental health” (site nursingtimes.net). Although a nurse’s physical care standards may be high, failure to address the psychological aspects of health care will still cause problems. A nurse must be able to not only detect the physical ailments of a patient, but also be able to sense underlying psychological problems that may be a result of a physical ailment. Physically ill patients with poor psychological health tend to have worse outcomes than those with good psychological health. No matter how good physical ministrations would be, ministration would still lack because a patient’s psychological health does not match his or her physical health. Nurses indefinitely spend more time with patients in contrast to counselors or therapists, therefore patients are more willing to open up to a nurse than another medical professional because of built up trust and comfort. One could argue that nurses are ideally placed to gather some psychological health information that may not be otherwise obtained because of comfort issues, allowing them to further aid a patient and alert doctors to have the patient see a medical professional about their mental health so his or her physical health improvement is not delayed (sitenursingtimes.net). In this case, psychology depends on nursing to do some part in getting information that health professionals need for both mental and physical

Additionally, in my own words I will describe the metaparadigm concepts of person, environment, health/healing and nursing.
