Psychology: Personal Statement Essay

Improved Essays
Since I was a child, psychology was something that I was interested in. Understanding humans and the brain are a huge passion of mine. I struggle with depression and it's one of the hardest things that I deal with on a daily basis and it is constantly heading my curiosity about the human psyche and I would like to help others who struggle with it as much as I do and to figure out why it occurs the way it does. I have taken plenty of psychology classes at my high school and even before high school. I have volunteered at hospitals and worked with my aunt, who works for DHS, and I've noted the various situations that can completely alter someone's life and psychology analyzes those situations and provides those people with an escape. As a friend of many people with chronic depression and having dealt with it myself, I know that the last thing most people want to do is take a boatload of medication, so my treatment would involve minimal medication. It also gets really exhausting trying to find a therapist that one is comfortable talking with. In my sessions patients get to know the therapist as well as participate in different activities such as music or art therapy. This neutralizes the atmosphere of the therapy session allowing for more breakthroughs and overall a more comforting environment. Sessions would also incorporate group sessions where patients develop lasting relationships with others that face the same problems, similar to AA (Alcohol Anonymous), these group sessions allow for accountability and that’s really important when it comes to treating mental health. Not only that, I would work very hard to completely personalize treatment plans to the individual person because I know what it’s like to feel as though my doctor is just treating me like a stranger and that’s not okay, especially when it comes to treating mental health

Personal Statement Almost everyone had a rod in hand as they walked through the main street headed for the pier or docks to try and reel in a tasty morsel for dinner. In my small fishing village surrounded by serene mountains and lush waters, I grew up distant from many of life’s amenities and creature comforts. Surrounded by family and relatives, I lived in a capsule of love. Little did I know that in several years, I would be on a plane bound for the United States, uncertain about my future but resolve in my dreams.…

At gatherings adults would always ask me what I wanted to become. I would say something about how I was interested in becoming a vet or a teacher and they would smile and at how lovely that was. Such a simple question, yet, if I was to be completely honest the answer was that I had no clue. That is, until the start of my sophomore year of high school when I decided to take AP Psychology. I didn’t know too much about the subject…

Baylor Personal Statement I could hear conversation coming from inside the room. Confused and eager, I positioned myself behind the door. Why was no one excited? The faint murmur of the next sentence cut straight through my heart, “Due to the lack of oxygen during your son’s birth, there is a high probability of him developing disorders during his childhood.” This couldn’t be happening to my baby brother.…

I clearly remember how angry I was when I watched a video about a two-year-old Chinese girl who was hit by a truck five years ago. The poor girl, then, was left to death by almost 20 people who passed by. How human being – an only creature who can feel love – could have such a cruel action? I had kept that anger for almost five years until I learned about the “bystander bias,” which is the tendency for any given bystander to be less likely to give aid if other bystanders are present. The presence of many people can make individuals “scruple” to help poor victims.…

School Psychology is a career I am drawn to as a result of my experience in high school, and the innate empathy I feel for adolescents who are struggling with school. When one’s entire life’s trajectory is contingent on the decisions they make during an incredibly vulnerable, confusing, and trying stage of life, I believe it’s important that they receive support, advocacy, and guidance from someone who can identify with, and validate their experiences. I was granted an opportunity to “escape” in a way that actually set me ahead of my peers. Most students though, won’t have that opportunity and will opt for other means of escape. I want to be in a career where I help prevent that, and I believe that my unique experience means I am better equipped…

I believe that the best way to help a child is rooted in identifying what they need and creating a plan that works for them and their needs. This identification and planning is important in providing the child a solid foundation to succeed in their education. In elementary school I volunteered in the self-contained special education classroom during recess, in high school I worked with the Best Buddies program and started volunteering at my elementary school, and I’ve continued to volunteer in schools throughout my college years. While I've loved working one-on-one with kids I want to help in a bigger way, which is why I'm pursuing a degree and career in school psychology. The job of a school psychologist can be summed up into three distinct…

Personality is a topic so complex and intertwined with both itself and outside factors it’s difficult to pinpoint any one specific cause for a trait, especially on a personal level. Ultimately, the fact that personality is a multiplicity of different factors and effects all intricately combined is the only thing we can really seem to be sure of. Luckily, this hasn’t stopped those in the field of psychology from trying to explain it. It’s complexity may even be the reason so many people find it fascinating; it wouldn’t be difficult to argue that personality is the part of psychology that people take the most interest in. It is the easiest idea in psychology for us to apply to our own lives and many people find it enjoyable to learn about something…

Like every child, I went through the ubiquitous “why” stage where I posed this question even to the smallest, most mundane events of life. Filled with genuine curiosity and fascination, I desired to understand the ornate workings of the world. Unlike the majority of children, however, I did not lose this fervor and drive to find answers. This inquisitiveness laid the foundation for my interest in research work. Growing up, my family placed a tremendous emphasis on health, fitness, and nutrition.…
