Psychology Major Personal Statement

I am pursuing a psychology major at UCSC. There are three courses required before declaring an Intensive Psychology major: a math requirement, PSYC 1: Introduction to Psychology, and PSYC 2: Introduction to Psychological Statistics. I have already fulfilled these through AP tests for AB Calculus, Psychology, and Statistics. I plan to declare my major within a year. Before I can begin taking upper-division elective courses, I need to take PSYC 10: Introduction to Developmental Psychology and PSYC 100: Research Methods in Psychology. Once I begin taking upper-divisions, I have more flexibility. I need to take two courses in each subfield of Developmental, Cognitive, Social, and Clinical-Personality. I then need to take either PSYC 181: Psychological Data Analysis or PSYC 182: Advanced Research Methods, and ten credits of either PSYC 194: Advanced Research or PSYC 195: Senior Thesis. These classes in particular excited me, because I am very interested in …show more content…
I have mapped out my schedule with courses I enjoy and a work load I can manage, and am eager to start applying myself at a college level. My courses will help prepare me for the internships that I hope to get, and I can’t wait to begin turning my interests into a profession. I have researched clubs and organizations I am interested in, such as the Student Union Assembly and Lacrosse (http://admissions.ucsc.edu/why-ucsc/organizations.html). My interests in behavior, cognition, and research make psychology an exciting major for me to study, while my values of relationship, service, and discovery mean that I am excited to use my major to help my community. The resources that would be most helpful to me in planning and carrying out my goals are my college and major advisors, Learning Support Services, and the Career Center (http://advising.ucsc.edu/index.html, http://lss.ucsc.edu/,

The two upper division courses in my major are PSY 3100- Developmental Psychology and PSY 4370- Introduction to Clinical and Counseling Psychology. These courses will be useful in this field since “PSY 3100 provides an overview of the empirical evidence regarding physical, cognitive, social and emotional changes that occur from conception to death and PSY 4370 introduces students to major perspectives and practices in contemporary clinical and counseling psychology (APSU Undergraduate Bulletin).” According to What Can I Do With This Major?, a few high impact strategies they suggest are: part job or summer jobs as a camp counselor or a tutor, complete an internship for academic credit, volunteer with organizations such as a crisis hotline, Big Brother Big Sister, Special Olympics, etc.. I have already signed up to volunteer at Big Brother Big Sister, just waiting for them to contact me back, and I have worked at a hotline for troubled teens. I would love to acquire a summer job as a camp counselor and complete an internship.…

Post-Secondary plan After high school, I intend to go to Cabrillo Community college. Once there, I intend to major in psychology to become a mental health counselor. I chose this because since I was a small child, I've always wanted to help people, but felt that taking a career in medicine was not something I was interested in. To do this, I will have to take several courses in general psychology, professional ethics, cognitive psychology, and counseling psychology. For each semester, I intend to take four classes, and two courses in the summertime.…

I studied brain and behaviour during my first year of clinical medicine, and found that I was particularly intrigued by neuroscience. Throughout my year at Barts and the London, I thought a lot about whether the course was right for me, and began considering other options. I struggled to feel passionate about the course and my future as a doctor, but decided to complete the year to confirm my feeling that a career in medicine was not right for me. During this year, however, I developed a particular interest in the study of the brain, brain development and human behaviour. These lectures became the highlight of the year, and made me really keen to learn more about the subject.…

At gatherings adults would always ask me what I wanted to become. I would say something about how I was interested in becoming a vet or a teacher and they would smile and at how lovely that was. Such a simple question, yet, if I was to be completely honest the answer was that I had no clue. That is, until the start of my sophomore year of high school when I decided to take AP Psychology. I didn’t know too much about the subject…

Baylor Personal Statement I could hear conversation coming from inside the room. Confused and eager, I positioned myself behind the door. Why was no one excited? My previous self-statement for New College proposed a Neuroscience major with added components of behavior and psychology; however, my studies ended up taking me more in the direction of behavior and theory than planned. I still feel as though a proficient understanding in neurobiology was necessary and helpful in understanding and participating in my upper-level, non-biology courses. I used the basic major requirement for a Neuroscience/ Behavioral Biology degree at nearby institutions such as Emory and Georgia State University to guide my own degree path. Basic pre-requisites in the sciences are available at Alabama, as well as a wide variety of elective courses dealing with my depth-study, including Neuroethics, Neuroanthropology, and special topics in things like desire, attraction, psychadelics and ASC. Core courses include an introductory neurobiology course, a behavioral neuroscience course, a cognitive neuroscience course, and a laboratory.…

There isn’t one stand out moment in my ventures through my school years and everyday life that I could pinpoint to saying this is the motive and has led me to the decision I am at today. Rather than a single event, the culmination of events gave me an opportunity to consider the profession of psychology as a possible career path for me. I would consider my first psychology teacher in high school and my mother as a crucial focus of what I am trying to be like today. Seeing an idol, or what I saw them as, an image or representation of what I seem to be great and/or inspire to be.…
