What exactly is psychology? A simple definition to describe psychology is the study of the mind and behavior. Psychology seeks to understand and explain thought, emotion and behavior. Psychology can be applied to a variety of issues like mental health, performance enhancement, self-help, ergonomics, motivation, and productivity. With a further understanding of what psychology is we can then ask ourselves, what is behaviorism? Behaviorism, or behavioral psychology, is a theory of learning based on the idea that all behaviors are obtained through conditioning. Conditioning occurs through interaction with the environment. Behaviorists believe that human’s responses to environmental stimuli influence our behaviors. The word behaviorism applies to the school of psychology founded by John B. Watson from the belief that behaviors can be trained, measured, and changed. John B. Watson is considered to be the “father” of behaviorism. Behaviorism can be summed up by the following quote from Watson, “Give me a dozen healthy infants, well-formed, and my own specified world to bring them up in and I’ll guarantee to take any one at random and train him to become any type of specialist I might select—doctor, lawyer, artist, merchant-chief, and, yes, even beggar-man and thief, regardless of his talents, penchants, tendencies, abilities, vocations, and race of his ancestors.” (John B.
