The director, Roman Polanski, has a dark background that is somewhat incorporated into the film. He was born in Paris and was raised by Polish-Jewish parents. They moved back to Poland in 1937, and two years later Poland was invaded by Nazi Germany. At the time Polanski was just a child, and spent most of his time on his own trying to survive the Holocaust. He began his career with Polish film Knife in the Water, and created several other movies in the United Kingdom. A huge turning point in his life occurred in 1969 when his pregnant wife Sharon Tate was murdered by members of the Manson family. Other friends of Polanski’s were killed, and Polanski stated his absence on the night of the murders is the greatest regret of his life. The darkness …show more content…
Immediately after, Gittes meets with Evelyn Mulwray--a woman concerned about her husband cheating. During the conversation her eyes are shaded, and it is easy to tell she is lying about something. She reveals her husband, Hollis, is the chief engineer for Los Angeles Water and Power. Gittes follows Mr. Mulwray, hears him oppose the creation of a dam, and finds Mulwray with another woman. After pictures are published in the newspaper, Gittes meets the real Evelyn Mulwray. Gittes realizes he was set up and Mr. Mulwray was the target of this investigation. As Gittes tries to find Mr. Mulwray, Lieutenant Lou Escobar reveals the corpse of Mr. Mulwray. He suspects it was murder and continues his investigation. Water Department Security Chief Claude Mulvihill and a henchman (played by Polanski) warn him of the dangers that lie ahead, and slash his nose to serve as a warning. The next day, Ida Sessions calls his office and she reveals she pretended to be Mrs. Mulwray originally. She gives him clues to help him figure out what is happening, but refuses to reveal who hired her. Later he meets with Mrs. Mulwray, who is obviously not telling him everything. He learns her former name was Cross, and her father was a former business partner of her husband. After meeting with Mr. Yelburton, Gittes’ suspicions are confirmed. He meets with Mrs. Mulwray again and they discuss her father’s relation with her husband. As soon as Gittes brings up Noah Cross, Evelyn becomes incredibly anxious and has a hard time saying he is her father.
