Tensions erupt like a volcano when the main characters, Izzy and her mother, don’t “see eye to eye” in Jennifer Cervantes’ excerpt from Tortilla Sun (Cervantes 21). Starting in the tile-flecked kitchen first thing in the morning and ending in Izzy’s dungeon-like bedroom moments later, the text lets us as readers eavesdrop on a conversation about moving that boils over rather quickly. When all is said and done, parent and child are left separated by a closed door (as well as vastly different perspectives on their journeys away from home). Essentially, the ways that Izzy and her mom look at the prospect of moving for the summer are so different that it sparks a conflict full of frustration, leaving their relationship torn and tattered. First and foremost, conflict in the form of frustration…

Disney Pixar has a funny way of captivating their audiences and eliciting emotional responses. So, it’s not surprising they are able to do this effectively with a movie about emotions. Inside Out is an excellent example of a universal film, because it has a wealth of information to share with any field, especially marketing and consumer behaviors. These are some of the observations I blogged in class while watching the film: • Once the perception of the broccoli is changed from gross to enticing (via the classic parent "airplane" trick) Riley's emotions are more willing to allow the food into her system.…

Human nature is defined as “certain social, cultural, and intellectual traits and forms of behavior possessed exclusively by humans” (Lecture 8/8). The emotions are located in her mind and control her view on the world. Her intellectual view is controlled by the emotions, as seen in the clip when Fear was talking to Joy about standing up and speaking to the class. To any intellectual thinker that would seem like an everyday thing, but to Riley or should I say Riley’s emotions that seem like a horrible thing. Having her intellectual view controlled by the emotions means her human behavior is not hers at all.…

A psychologist named Paul Eckman did a study of universal emotions and found that there is a set of six emotions that are recognized by humans regardless of region, culture, or age. As humans, we express and recognize these emotions (happiness, anger, fear, envy, sadness, and surprise) the same way. “Inside Out” covers five of these six emotions. These emotions let us know when to be empathetic, excited, and even laugh. Thinking back to the humanism perspective and one of the basic assumptions being that humans are born trusting other humans, the movie captures this perfectly by also showing the emotions of Riley’s parents as well.…
