Contextual Factors
I visited Ms. Veal’s class mainly in the morning time, so I spent a lot of time in the class that she had for advanced placement students. There were no inclusive students in either of the classes that I was able to attend. Ms. Veal’s classroom was very relaxed, and the students were not forced to learn. Ms. Veal was very easygoing and mild tempered, so she and the students had no problem getting along. One presentation I observed was an introduction to abnormal psychology. The instructor gave a small introduction about what abnormal psychology was. Most of the instructors’ lesson plans cover main content areas within the introductory psychology course. The objectives of this lesson were to: (1) Discuss and interpret a definition for abnormal behavior (2) Provide historical overview of abnormal psychology (3) Describe and discuss classification, diagnosis, and assessment, and to (4) Identify and discuss assessment techniques. Ms. Veal discussed the basics of abnormal psychology and common disorders. Ms. Veal made sure she gave clear instructions on what the students should do during their class period. I believe that it was a good thing that she gave an introduction so that the students would know exactly what they would be doing. I feel that the objectives were very appropriate for their grade level. I believe this because the students seemed to understand Ms. Veal’s lecture.
